Daniel (dkmurphys) is a big fan of these scooters and Vespa's. While in Rome recently, Daniel posted several photos of such vehicles.
So this one goes out to you Daniel.
The scene was captured in Prague, and way into the bg you can see one of the Powder Towers. Its where they used to keep the Gun Powder, and today you can go up inside the Towers and be rewarded with beautiful views.
This photo is an obvious HDR, hope its not TOO hdr for most of you - I do try to keep the HDR effect to a minimum.
In the WS, you can see the non HDR version if you're curious. I used 3 photos at a differential of -1, 1, and +1 exposure. Between the two photos, the blues are the same, the reds are different, and the lighting is very different.
I tried to utilize the lines on the road as much as possible to create depth and perspective.
Thanks for looking!

Joli travail. Une image qui attire le regard.
holmertz (52656) 2013-02-11 14:12
A bright red object hardly ever destroys a picture. This object also happens to be nicely designed. The street could have been almost anywhere, but the background is no doubt Prague. The HDR is nicely done.
weetrees (79) 2013-02-11 14:38
Absolute stoater of an image Craig which pulled me in before i realised it was one of yours
Not at all an obvious HDR what is the most striking about it is the ide angle and the close view of the bike
great colours cracking vista
possibly a commercially workable image fine art wise it would look good as a poster with the peeps removed from it :-)

Hi Craig, I also like the view of scooters. And I was riding one (with a driver, of course) in Angkor Wat. It was such a fun. Nice shot from Prague. Now when I also post my photos it may seem we were there together:). I will see more vespas, I suppose in two weeks in Rome. Fine composition with this red object dominating the scene. Indeed, HDR is much better.
jjcordier (79297) 2013-02-11 23:50
Belle utilisation de ton grand angle pour réaliser cette très intéressante composition où le scooter rouge joue les vedettes.

Both yourself and Andrew (Macondo) have posted fine Vespa shots this week. I like how you have positioned it in frame, for ultimate impact. Its turned wheel acts like a nod, inviting viewers to take a look beyond, down the street, and we have good lines to guide us. There are plenty of accessible details to help us form an impression of the location.
Have a great day,
macondo (19516) 2013-02-12 2:00
So you too have a Vespa scooter shot this week! I think the wide angle view and low viewpoint add drama and emphasise the perspective effect of the buildings. I know this street in Prague, I've walked up it towards the tower. I don't think the HDR is overdone or obvious, but perhaps the result is a weensy bit lacking in shadow or contrast, after all. Looking at the original, I think you could achieve pretty much the same effect with judicious and careful use of layer masks in Photoshop. But this is a good example of how HDR should be used, whereas so many of its devotees seem to think the unnatural look is what one should actually strive for. Well done.
tyro (24766) 2013-02-12 3:18
I am sure that Daniel will love this! I certainly do!
What I think is wonderful is that you have included a non-HDR image as a workshop - that way we can very easily compare the two images and see just quite what an improvement your subtle and expert HDR work has brought about. As Andrew (macondo) says, I am sure that a similar effect could have been brought about using layer masks buit, at least for me, that would have been quite a fiddle. So, for someone like yourself who is conversant with HDR, that's no doubt the way to go for you.
Once again, your much loved and super-wide "city" lens has come up trumps and given this picture incredible perspective and depth, also aided by the very strong line of the kerb on the right. Fabulous colours, lovely light (vastly improved with your HDR work) and stunning depth of field and sharpness throughout.
P.S. Did you know that "Vespa" means "wasp" in Italian? And that the company who makes these scooters also makes a tiny three-wheeled utility vehicle which they call an "Ape" - that means a "bee"!
snunney (98944) 2013-02-12 3:54
I am not really a fan of HDR, but this one is subtlety done and is a definite improvement on the original. The low point of view puts the emphasis on the start of the show whilst also allowing us to appreciate some of the magnificent architecture of Prague. I really like it.
delpeoples (58030) 2013-02-12 5:20
Daniel will love this and I've gotta say that the style of the photo is also a little Daniel-esque. Beautiful low POV and exaggerated perspective from the wide angle lens. The colours are really striking, no doubt down to the HDR and the whole image is beautifully exposed. Nice work!
Have a lovely day

nice tribute to Daniel, who has posted a scooter image today too! A shot and composition that benefits from the superb quality of the Sigma lens. Super effect with perfect clarity, colours and light. Don't worry I think you have got the HDR processing just right on this one, in fact it gives the image real impact and presence. Well done!
Regards - Brian.

This is almost a "portrait" of a red scooter. It brings liveliness to this historical city.
Never been to Prague, but totally enjoy it through your wonderful pictures.
Miguel82 (27646) 2013-02-12 7:35
This is an excellent idea to have included that very well designed scooter in the foreground
A superb photo,
Great colors, excellent sharpness, good light conditions and contrast

very fine picture with a very reasonable use of hdr technic. I don't like this shots which have nothing to do with reality ... Very fine low pov and excellent sharpness.Very good contribution to TE.TFS.

Bonjour, cher Craig,
L'effet HDR est parfait pour cette composition. Tous les éléments ressortent avec beaucoup de naturel.
De plus, le scooter avec sa superbe couleur rouge attire irrésistiblement le regard et le point de fuite sur l’édifice.
krzychu30 (15512) 2013-02-12 9:31
I must admit after seeing some of your previous shots you have good nose to find some unique vehicles. This little scooter in red looks really great.I like your HDR treatment here. The low POV in combination with your wide-angle lens gives amazing effect.Well done!

That's a wonderful picture!
I really enjoyed your idea and the visual results of your excellent photo job!
Special regards to the chosen pov, composition and colors! HDR pleases me here!
TFS - congrats,

this shot makes me be thinking of Italy for obvious reasons. Those vehicles are excellent in the cities, especially during rush hours but it is also easy to park them almost everywhere. Remarkably clean streets and pavements in Prague, could it be because of tourist season? Anyhow, this clean environment match your "clean" picture very well. I like the crisp and clear freshness in this shot, much because of the colors but probably also because of the HDR-effect.Nice shot!
Have a nice evening.
dkmurphys (58654) 2013-02-13 1:09
Well thanx a lot! I could take a ride with this one in Prague too, it doesn't have to be Rome...I have pictures with scooters also in Ghent, Amsterdam, Bucharest, Barcelona and Lisbon.
I like your angle a lot, especially with the old tower in the background. Good work as usual!
PS: this year I might upgrade myself to a motorcycle...:D
abmdsudi (54053) 2013-02-13 2:20
I love the simplicity of the shot and colours with main focus is therefore the bright red scooter which is very much a part of the urban environments and so can influence our choice as photographers of composition and viewpoint. Well done.
SnapRJW (31629) 2013-02-13 2:59
Hi Craig - I do like your POV here, nice and low and focusing the eye clearly on the red scooter which, thanks to your WA lens, has taken on a rather sexy look. I am most impressed by the HDR here, seeing the comparison has convinced me that maybe I should give it a go. Fabulous funky shot. Warm regards rosemary

Bel effet donner par le grand angle, le rendu des détails et des couleurs, un HDR au top, sympa le titre :-)

Good use of the wide angle. Very eye-catching the red scooter in the foreground. A nice street view too, that ends up in the fabulous old tower. Great work:) TFS. Have a great evening.

This shot could be an averditing one, very well done ! It is HDR yet, but not a too much one and this is the right way I think to use this technics.
Have a nice week,

impressive presentation of this red scooter,
I would like to have a personal one, fantastic
thanks for your idea sharing it with us

I don't know much about HDR, but this one has been achieved to look very natural...if you hadn't mentioned it in your note I probably would have never noticed a difference. Great job keeping it realistic. This low point of view coupled with the striking red color makes for not only a strong composition, but the wide angle really makes everything explode out of the street. Bold colors throughout and sharp detail make it even more appealing. Nice tribute to Daniel and the Vespa/scooter.
adores (45329) 2013-02-20 18:49
I really like the way you framed the scooter! The red colour stands out so nicely here. Then, we can see the nice buildings and the famous tower in background. HDR is not evident at all! - you have done a good work! I like the result!
JFS (32459) 2013-02-20 22:51
I had missed this one! An original and effective POV, a way to see things differently, and a crystal clear image, all together make it a great shot.
mjw364 (1056) 2013-02-21 10:55
Nice colours in this one. The red really pops out in a 3D kind of way. HDR as it is supposed to be.
However, I have a motorbike - BMW - and in the UK 'bikers vs. mods' was a big thing back in the 1960s as characterised in the film Quadrophenia. So I have to say whilst I am a fan of this image I am not a big fan of these hairdryers on wheels I come down firmly on the side of the bikers! (Having said that I learned to ride on a Lambretta scooter when I was in my teens - we used to 'steal' my best friends Dad's Lambretta whilst he slept after his night shifts!) Ha ha!
annjackman (21899) 2013-02-21 23:46
If you had taken this from a more traditional angle it would not have the super impact that this image has. I love the close view of this very shiny red scooter surrounded by the lines of the kerb and road markings. The buildings of the city and the group of people walking all seem so well placed with nothing that distracts.
Kind Regards, Ann
josepmarin (58357) 2013-02-23 4:37
Hi, my friend Craig,
a smart composition here, I like the nice red Vespa in foreground, which stands out on a beautiful cityscape, with a great architecture, specially the spectacular tower in background.
The HDR is not strong, and gives an efficient graphical and chromatic power at your composition.
A good low POV and a deep perspective of the street, it's a beautiful shot.
Noel_Byrne (31116) 2013-02-23 8:25
You did a brilliant job using the lines like this, the picture does have great depth, and the scooter makes a perfect star for the shot too! Very colorful and vibrant, I can see why these cool little vehicles are so popular. I especially love the reflections in the mirror, and of course, all the beautiful buildings surrounding it!
All the best

Ohhh !!! great shot.. original shot... maravellous shot!! Greetings Craig!!!!!!!!!

Going back through your gallery to catch up with the ones I have missed, this shot caught my attention with the wide angle effect and the flashy colours.
Hey! You know my point of view about HDR, but let's admit it, this one looks nice, and although it is noticeable, it is still properly dosed and your intervention deserves respect. It suits the photo, without denaturing its essence.
I shouldn't leave before underlining the low angle that adds some drama to your shot.
Have a nice weekend!
startacked (1355) 2013-04-01 12:59
Great angle and contrast. Oh its HDR is it. Looks real anyway! I'm a car kind of guy and I have never owned a scooter/ motorcycle/ moped. Then a few years ago I rented a scooter in Milano. I just can't believe they just hire you one when you present a drivers license. You need totally different skills. Yes sure you know the rules but you have to look very differently than in a car. Everything went fine until I had to drive the scooter on the stoop/ sidewalk. I was walking next to it and gave it some gas and the thing went off draging my with it. I fell ego busted. No more scooters for me. I stick with cars! :)
Indrasish (2939) 2013-07-29 7:34
great shot here.. Love the composition with this scooter, street and architecture.. Like the angling and the perspective.. Superb image quality too.. Very well done..
Nice colors too..
