Photographer’s Note
Dongda St. Naxi Concert Hall Lijang Yunnan Povince.
In this part of China, Yunnan, the people belong to the Naxi minority, they are descended from the Tibetans. What is very interesting about this "community" is that the woman are the dominant gender. This is seen very clearly when strolling the place. They inherit personal property through the youngest daughter. And yes the men are traditionally child-rearers, gardeners and musicians.
An other interesting thing is that the Naxi uses pictographs, and when paying a visit please take a look for this book because the sayings are wise. It is called: Proverbs of the Naxi nationality.
It is old age that forces people to bring up children. It is hunger that makes people grow crops.
And this probably means you have to take you mum and dad in your house when they are old……
Any way inside the Dongda St. Naxi Concert Hall these men are playing their Naxi music. I believe that for most of the men their age is give or take 70 to 85 years each. The music is very much like Tibetan music, the performance is about an hour so keep that in mind. But you wouldn’t be the first one who leaves the place after 10 minutes. And when doing so make as much noise if you can, you will blend in with the rest of the Chinese who leaves the place. Well better is of course to be as quiet as possible, but hey then you are probably not a Chinese tourist.

Très belle image chatoyante, on ressent intensément la présence et la concentration des musiciens...

There is something very intriguing about this picture... I understand why Maciek thought about "wax figures" - I thought about the lighting which Rembrandt used ib his "big" paintings where the personnages were enlighted with that same ancient yellow-ish glow, and the background remainded dark... -> Look at the similarity with The Feast of Belshazzar.
I also thought about the medieval paintings where brown, red and yellow as main colours were used.
* En nou niet gelijk terug op visite hóór! - ;o))) - Ik schrijf critiques alléén maar omdat ik het leuk vind... Maar evengoed bedankt voor de comments on Annecy & Noorwegen Hans! :o)

What an interesting image - closer more to a painting than to a photograph! Very well found moment - the expression of the faces, the colors, the composition make me to feel like I am standing in front of a painting in the gallery...
TFS!

Hello Hans,
Your note is very instructive. I am impressed by the atmosphere which derives from your picture: this is a mix of a Pieter Bruegel's painting and somewhat of Buena Vista Social Club. Very special.
Best regards
