These are the limestone rock formations known as the Pinnacles. Indigenous Australians shunned this area, as they considered the rocks resembled giant fingers of an underground monster, reaching up through the surface. Incredibly, they were not discovered by Europeans until 1936. I've actually reduced saturation here a little. Taken just before sunset on a tour. I would have loved more time here.
Cervantes was the author of Don Quixote
"The town was named after a ship that was wrecked nearby. The ship, in turn, was named after Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote." (Wikipedia)
The stones in the fg are markers for the four wheel drive & off road vehicles to stay on the track.

This is a fantastic panoramic view Chris. Beautiful golden colored rocks of limestone occupy most of the frame. The rocks indeed look like fingers. The green trees make a nice color contrast against the blue sky in the background and yellow field of rocks in the foreground. The sharpness, lighting and colors are superb.

The wideness of the field is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the rock fomations. The late afternoon light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

What an eye-opener!
I have never seen anything like this!
I must admit, some of them look as if they are trying to emerge from the ground.
The long shadows help to define the surface relief and produce even more drame to these rocks.
I just wish thet there was something in view to help give a sense of scale. Despite that, I am impressed. Australia has so many secrets!
Have a good day,

des teintes dorées, en tous cas d'un jaune très vif, ces pierres ressortent comme des pépites d'or et les ombres en accentuent le relief.
Beaucoup de profondeur avec un arrière plan qui manque peut-être un peu d'atout.
My best regards.

Post your photo and the clarity of light and attractive landscape of rock protruded above the soil and the natives believe is unparalleled

Un bon cliché d'un site assez extraordinaire qui a une histoire très intéressante. C'est curieux ces pierres qui me font penser à des petits ménhirs que l'on peut voir en Bretagne.
Bravo et bonne fin de journée.

I was already wondering how it comes that a place in AU can have a Spanish name ... Interesting story of how names are given to places.
Again a very fascinating but bizarre landscape.
Like someone else already noted, some of these rocks look a little like menhirs.
Good high POV to give an excellent overview.
Best regards, Paul

Hi dear Chris
bartleby, SteveH and now you - all shooting this amazing landscape so superbly. I think you're trying to tell me something - and that's to get my lazy backside over to WA and have a look. A beautiful POV, superb light control and amazing natural colours. Even more amazing that you had to reduce the saturation. A kick-a*s photo, congrats.
Have a beaut day

I like the title and this is unique that I have never seen before on earth. These pinnacles looking like solidified clay in amazing wide field.
Thanks and kind regards,

This is really a very intriquing landscape with all the pinnicles, you are right it would have been really cool to shoot the sihouette of them against the sunset. There are places we just couldn't stay till sunset.
Love the golden tone of the whole area. Good POV show the overall of the area with so many pinnicles. I might have tried to avoid the path to give the feeling of all natural environment.
Graal (95363) 2012-03-01 23:15
unusual landscape. Good captured theme, place and presentation. Amazing nature. Fine comparison to Cervantes' novel about Don Quixote. Is lacking only the windmills.
Have a nice day.
Angshu (54745) 2012-03-02 3:08
Did you post a picture of this amazing landscape earlier? Quite amazing how the rock formations stand out from the sandy bed...appears that selective erosion would have created this natural marvel.

These rock formations are interesting! The yellow tones all over are really nice. Fascinating! Great capture!

Stunning scenery. Great composition, lighting & saturation of colours (incredible that you actually had to decrease it)
