Sunset in Peraia, a small town about 30 km outside Thessaloniki (the Capital of Northern Greece, the second largest city of the country, with more than 2300 years of important history). Peraia was the favorite destination for the summer vacations of the inhabitants of the city, during the 60's and 70's. Then beautiful Halkidiki took its place and for about 20 years Peraia passed a period of decline. Nowadays is starting to gain back its old glamour, and it's a place worth a visit for its great fishtavernes and nice beach.
ABOUT THE TITLE
According to Eurostat, Greece is the 5th poorest country among the 27 members of the E.U. with 30% of its population living very close or below the limit of poverty. Only Romania, Letonia, Lithouania and Hungary are in worse position. With the new measures imposed by the Troika in the new Memorandum today, leading deeper and deeper into endless recession, next year Greece will for sure go higher in this sad list. Thank you so much all you friends, allies and partners, E.U. and IMF for your help, we don't need it anymore. We can die all by ourselves, your help is not necessary!

Jeppo (17645) 2012-02-08 10:12
the picture is brilliant...and the golden tones warm the hearth.
title is bitter...sad but true.
I'm happy to live in the (probably) last real democracy in Europe: Switzerland.
cargus (10456) 2012-02-08 10:14
npecanhuk (75660) 2012-02-08 10:53
Colors, management of light, chosen pov and compostiion are highlights but everything looks perfect!!!
As for the title and comments, I do hope Greece can find a solution for all those problems! Brazil has faced many, many, many problems... it's better now, but it's got a long way to go to real prosperity! If the whole World doesn't find a formula... Nor Greece, nor Brazil will ever give better lives for their people: us! Let's hope for the best!
My kind regards,

Hello Hercules - I hear your anger and listening to the news it seems as if the money-men have totally unrealistic expectations of Greece and her people. A beautiful sunset. I love the delicate line of lamps along the pier which, due to your POV become, along with the figures, a wonderful element of the image. With warm wishes Rosemary
yquem46 (38752) 2012-02-08 10:59
Yes depressive all the more with the snowy weather we have in northern europe these days but I suppose that, as a greek, you're certainly talking about something else quite different!
A nice shot with this long perspective of the bridge enhanced by the presence of people and the line of light posts
Of course great sunset colors and nice compo with the sun well placed
have a nice evening
kordinator (21293) 2012-02-08 11:07

one more time a real great take of yours, a magnificent capture all about!
sad title, but poverty is not only a greek phenomen, even in the richer country´s like the one i live in, it´s meanwhile a big problem..

rasputinq (70) 2012-02-08 12:33
I love how you managed to add a sad mood to an otherwise "dream destination" image.
I really hope things get better for Greece and the Greek people. It's scary to see how money can rule over everything else.
Kali nikta and congtaulations for the picture!
Schnappilic (9692) 2012-02-08 12:33
I like so much the splendid colors of sunset. Great time and atmosphere. The framing and the sharpness are best. Congratulation!
All the best,

siudzi (34141) 2012-02-08 13:40
Lovely picture captured and presented with superb saturation of colors. Very moody shot. Well done and tfs!

Best regards, Nino.

francio64 (39888) 2012-02-08 14:48
Well done and TFS!

wonderful sun set shot with nice frame work...like the last sun in the golden tone sky with its reflection in the water...
superb clarity...very nice light management with nice color contrast & sharpness...
patdeph (35748) 2012-02-08 23:37
wonderful perspective in wonderful colors and light!
I love the graphism effect due to the different lines crossing themselves,I love the brilliant water, and I think the sun is superbly placed.Magnificent!
About your note, I can understand perfectly what you mean, but we are living in a crazy world that I can't understand.Nobody want to let you die alone, don't worry, soon, we will die all together.
Graal (103036) 2012-02-08 23:48
very nice view and composition. Good shot during the sunset time. I like the pier and warm hues also.
They in Poland also live with difficulty but we will advise ourselves in spite of political quarrels in our parliament. They far better for us live than in the days of governments of communists.
Have a nice day.
BennyV (18977) 2012-02-09 0:28
Great picture, more important title & note. I fully sympathize. Our governments are quick to save banks, and perfectly willing to strangle the poor for it.
Keep faith, in spite of the adversities.

Ola Hercules ,

Hello Hercules. Title and photo could not be more different. The viewer is drawn to the problem of Greece and the EU. All hope for a solution to the satisfaction of all concerned. The photo is beautiful and expressive. My compliments.
Didi (60590) 2012-02-10 1:33
Of course it's a very interesting lateral perspective.
I love this quite ambiance away from noisy towns.
Kielia (24077) 2012-02-10 8:34
this place does not look real! A very beautiful impression with very moody colors and a wonderful light. But concerning the title and the note I have to agree to Pascale: We won’t let you die alone!
emka (102531) 2012-02-10 13:54
What to say? I do not know nothing about the politics. Why should the ordinary people pay for not their should? I cannot understand it. I hope everything will end well for greece and other countries.
Wonderful shot, The way to the end of this pier seems endless, I like this triangular composition very much. Nice line of lamps, Gorgeous colours of sunset. The perpsective here is great, not depressive.
Warm regrads Malgo
lakshmip1949 (19081) 2012-02-10 14:09
This one is amazing with beautiful golden color tones. Beautiful lamps on the pier with people and the reflections. The sun is setting throwing the reflction in the water. Good management of light with amazing colors and sharpness.

sacimar (27463) 2012-02-11 4:43
Nard (6972) 2012-02-11 6:16
I can't comment your note and the crazy word we live but this picture is magnificent and very rich with this water like liquid gold. I like the perspective and how the pier seems having no end, the silhouettes and the global warm tone.
bebbetto (40) 2012-02-11 8:34
Light and colors are fascinating. The framing is masterful. Very high quality as your usual.
Your note is a cry of pain. I sincerely hope you get out of this bad situation
mkamionka (39133) 2012-02-12 2:34
I have watched this photo for a while trying to understand the title but it became clear of course after reading your note.
I am sorry to hear the sad news. I think this is just the statistics. I am sure people in Poland live in much worse conditions and have much lower standard of living even if our statistics is getting better. Statistics can be twisted to show what people want to see. For example we have relatively low unemployment, but the reason for that is, that millions of especially young people emigrated abroad in the search for work. Similarly we have huge growth in GDP, but it is because we were extremely poor for over 50 years, so the indicators can only go up. Also our average income is going up so fast, but in fact these are just salaries of a small group of managers in Warsaw, while people in small towns and villages did not see any life improvement since 20 years. But the average is growing like crazy. So first of all I believe you are not in such a bad shape. But of course the bad statistics is used by bankers, investors and stupid ranking agencies against you.
That is why you are suffering. The system is corrupted. People in power don't care about well-being of nation just about statistics.
Let me leave this topic though.
This is another of your spectacular works.
The orange color tones are amazing. Fantastic composition with the pier creating indeed a great diagonal, contrary to the title your perspective is great especially with the repeated element of the lamp. It is a masterwork.
Have a great Sunday,
ChrisJ (116674) 2012-02-12 3:28
A fantastic sunset with vibrant warm orange colors & good reflections in the sea at right. The diagonal shoreline adds dynamism. Good silhouettes & sharpness. Perfect timing to catch the sun just above the horizon at left. Tfs!

Hi Hercules! Despite of the depressive situation, sharing this sunset images changes all the perspective we see about Greece at least, the beauty of this country doesn't lie in its economy but also deep within the people and its culture. Anyway, this is Life's inevitable cycle, eventually all will go through this and will pull it through.
On the brighter side, this post of yours is really beautiful. The orange tones are very attractive and pleasing to the eyes. The walkway evokes a great illusion that gives us a feeling of a tilted horizon. Top quality image, the sharpness and clarity is just superb! Bravo!
korbee (6619) 2012-02-14 11:11
This beautyful photo has something tragic, like yout note, but on the other hand it tells me something about hope for the future.
Unfortunately, the upper ten of greece and the rest of the world f....d it all up,and working class is the one suffering.....
