Photographer's Note
In the closing days of December 2011, I received a tantalizing email from the the cruise line, Yachts of Seabourn, inviting me to serve as a cultural enrichment lecturer on board the elegant cruise ship Seabourn Odyssey. The cruise was to depart on January 6, 2012 for a twelve day cruise to Papeete, Tahiti, and I would have to give seven lectures during the ship's eight days at sea. (The assignment gives new meaning to the expression "working vacation.") Despite the fact that the cruise was commencing only a week later and I was expected to give so many lectures, I accepted, albeit with considerable trepidation. The legendary American baseball star and popular folk philosopher, Yogi Berra, had expressed a curious aphorism that has long fueled my own decision making process, "When you come to a fork in the road, take it!" The Roman poet Horace was less ambiguous, when he wrote, "Carpe Diem!" In retrospect, this turned out to be one of the most exciting decisions I've made in years.
Moorea, where I shot this photograph, and Bora Bora 160 miles away, are known as the two most beautiful islands in the world not just suburbs of Paradise, but Paradise! And the lovely Polynesians, they appear to step out of Gaugin paintings.
In the next few weeks, as I find time, I will submit additional photos from the cruise. I will also begin a new group theme, "PARADISE ON EARTH" with two of my previous photos, "Suburb of Paradise I" and "Suburb of Paradise II". I welcome others to upload photos into the group theme from other genuinely beautiful exotic islands.
If anyone is interested, the titles of my lectures were "The Two Leonardos: and Neither of them DiCaprio"; "Leonardo's Universe", "The Greatest Englishman... Ever", "Patterns in Creativity: Right Brain-Left Brain", "Plate Tectonics and Search for Noah's Ark", "The Evolution of the Calendar: Julian, Gregorian, Maya and the Atomic Clock", and "Einstein: His Life, Work and the Manhattan Project."

Hello Bulent,
Sounds an interesting and no doubt informative set of lectures, what a lucky man you are to have working holidays like this. I find the atmosphere in this well composed shot quite sublime. The palm trees, the deck chairs, the lovely sky and the peaceful waters all come together in perfect harmony. Beautiful presentation.

Hello Bulent,
Welcome back from paradise! I can only imagine the beauty of French Polynesia. In this composition I like the one tall palm that bends towards the water, and the two empty chairs inviting us to sit and enjoy the view. I look forward to more photos from your most recent adventure!

Hello Bulent,
My husband, also a Leonard, must be the other person about whom you are talking!
One of the tantalising aspects of this site is that so many places are posted that one would love to visit. This is no exception!
It is verging on the monchrome, with its long shadowy reflections, giving a very distinct character and is beautifully composed. I like how the singule palm tree is cocking its head invitingly, saying, " Welcome to my World!"
Your notes vibrate with your enthusiasm for the place.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Bulent,
Welcome back from Paradise! The sky with clouds looks fine but I maybe prefer a more blue sky and green palms. But probably even in Paradise there is evening probably. Very interesting set of lectures, in various themes. The Greatest Englishman... Ever. Who could it be? Shakespeare? ;) Two Leonardos and neither of them Di Caprio - were there others? I am joking, of course. Einstein and Manhattan Project - I remember funny stories about Feynman and MP.
My dream is also to go somewhen to Pacific islands, so I wouldn't hesitate even a second. But at the moment I plan to realize other dream - Africa.
Warm regards

hello Bulent
in my mind, the paradise is blue and green, with some white, I have never thought that when the night is coming, this is grey everywhere ,even in paradise. And here, I can only imagine what it could be.It must be different when we are really in the place.Anyway, the sky is fantastic, and it must be very nice to be in these bungallows on the water.
I will never know how is Bora Bora nor Moorea, too much expensive for me, but nevermind, I have met another real paradise in small islands near Borneo.
For you, it was surely a great and exciting opportunity to spend time and give conferences during a cruise.
Have a nice week-end

Happy New Year to you and let me say how glad I was to hear that you were not on the Concordia and instead were spending time on our side of the equator. I hope you enjoyed the armth. I love the softness to this photo, the reflections on the water and the romantic palm trees. Isn't it amazing how they don't fall over at unbelievable angles like the one on the right?

Hola Bulent,
What a super trip. great landscapes, a cruise ( not the Concordia and your lectures
Funny the Two Leonardos...
Your capture is very well composed with the palm on the left as a kind of frame
Color almost grey with a mix of argent and blue is unique to create a different image ( not the classical golden beach-blue sky)

Hello Profesor Atalay,
I cant believe that you almost went to Bora Bora. From what I have heard it is the most beautiful Island on earth. James A. Michener spoke of this Island just as you have described the island to be in your most captivating Photographers Note. The image provided is full of fascinating texture. The deliberately under exposed photo contains the most attractive image, so unexpected and intriguing. I welcome most warmly the image that you have provided for us all. Welcome back from Paradise. It is always very nice to hear from you.
With my very best wishes for the year 2012!
Have a very creative week as always, professor!

Hello Bulent,
You're capturing well the atmosphere of this island by a good composition and tasteful deep tone, so it's impressive to see some cotages, sand and bay. Here seems so peaceful and calm place. And, a coconut tree seen at right side draws out and additional good effect as well as thick cloud in the sky, too.
Kind regards,

Ciao dear Bulent,
I understand what the title means, surely you have returned after seeing the most beautiful place in the world: French Polynesia. Your picture is quite rare because it shows only the silhouette of the village and the palm trees, but it is certainly interesting and enjoyable, creating a very charming atmosphere. excellent management of the light, especially in the sky. Sincere congratulations for this beautiful image, dear friend, I am also sure that the guests of the Seabourn Odyssey were lucky to be able to listen to your lessons.

Hi Bulent,
such a weak luminosity gives a strong personality to this fantastic tahitian landscape, creating an atmosphere of really suggestive calmness. If this place is not the paradise, really seems it, and I congratulate you about the invitation of the cruise line, because this cruise trip across the French Polynesia must be magnificent.
I like the combination of elements in this composition, especially the huts on the water, the great sloping coco-palm at the right side, and the gorgeous cloudy sky.
It's a beautiful work, my friend.

Hello Bulent,
Looking at the recent additions to your portfolio, this image and the one immediatel;y following it stand out for me. And what a pleasure to view and to read your notes. What an assignment too! The themes of your lectures are very interesting and I would have given the proverbial for an opportunity of attending them. Will they be incorporated into a new book or is there any other possibility of getting access to the content in published form in future? Congratulations on a meaningful contribution here.
