Sometimes I have those days that I'm bitter and that I necessarily want to have a good picture.
Then I take a little more risk than usual.
That morning, my wife and I woke up because of the lightning/ thunderstorms.
My wife looked at my face what time it was because I wanted so badly for a while to capture a lightening image/ picture.
Once on the beach arrived, I saw special appearance.
Left was the weather bad and right was the weather dry and the sun had risen quite for a while.
I didt make it difficult for me and took the first rows of piles in the sea and went back down and made myself as small as possible and covered my camera with my coat.
a few minutes later it was suspiciously quiet. I saw no more gulls, which first ran cozy next to me and it started to rain harder.
I walked quickly to the nearest hotel and hide me there
Not a moment too soon, a few minutes later the rain and lightning broke loose, at the spot/place where I was before.
A few minutes later again, I went back. The sky was completely cleared and the first people were swimming in the sea.
That day was my birthday and I thanked heaven that I could photograph that moment.
Then I do want to warn everyone! Shooting at the beach with thunderstorms is very dangerous!
For me it was the first, but also the last one to do it, it's to risky.
I also have a new challenge, my wife and I expecting a baby in April.
Canon 5D MarkII * 17-40mm L4 * tripod
I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy 2012.

Well Robert - Congratulations on the shot, the story and the expected baby! Your note is a perfect start to the day and made me smile, warm wishes for Christmas and 2012, a milestone year for you.
Landscape photography is so much about the weather and light and thanks to your willingness to brave the elements you were presented with a serendipitous moment where all the pieces of a puzzle fell together. Simple and effective composition with (as always) excellent management. The light, tonal and subtle colour shifts are enviable. I award you bonus points! Warm regards Rosemary
SteveH (6269) 2011-12-20 21:24
Hi Robert, too good - just too good. I'm with Rosemary, bonus points. cheers, Steve

Your patience is well rewarded as we are presented with this dramatic result as precise timing is vital in this type of shot. The sky was illuminated from the lightning bolt that landed in a distant horizon. This picture has a mild colour and great contrast. Awesome display and remarkable capture. Congrats
RhodieIke (11744) 2011-12-20 22:10
Wow Robert, This is fantastic and reading your note, a truly committed, brave and talented photographer. The simplicity, mood, colours, Dof, Pov are excellent, awesome lightning. BRAVO. Cheers Iain.

jadesgran (5423) 2011-12-20 22:24
A wonderful picture and certainly worth you getting up early for.BUT.......too dangerous.Still, we all need a `little` danger sometimes to achieve our goals.
Amazing shot.--I love it!
Congrats on the forthcoming event. That will get you up early !!!!!
Kind Regards Gladys.
CLODO (34552) 2011-12-20 22:32
Stunning picture with rain, thunderstorm and sun at the same time. The wooden poles are eyecatching and fill the empty beach.
Congratulations for your baby to come, and in the meantimes, spend good Xmas and 1st of January feasts.
delpeoples (58356) 2011-12-20 22:43
Dag dear Robert
I see you have been "getting some religion" too with this magnificant seascape. Amazing pastel tones, beautiful control of the shutter and fantastic perspective with the row of wood. But what makes this photo extraordinary is th lightning. Absolutely splendid, it's the shot we all wish we took.
annjackman (21899) 2011-12-20 22:56
Your note made me smile. I am pleased that the risky trip to the beach produced such a wonderful picture without you getting struck by lightening! The simple composition and beautiful colours make an outstanding composition. As usual your pictures are expertly produced and a real pleasure to view. Good luck with the baby - I look forward to hearing the arrival news.
Best wishes, Ann

Zolive (5935) 2011-12-20 23:08
wonderful picture with magnificent colors and great depth of field. The perspective is very good and lightnings into backgrounds are unreal. Congratulations.

You're crazy, but the result is a fantastic image, that you are not near to forget! The little story is not only enjoyable but also informative for the all the hotspurs who would like to try the same thing!
The picture in itself is a pleasure to look at, with a surprising, unique atmosphere and a very good composition. The line of wooden poles is mystifying. The light and colors are beautiful.

great the snapshot in the middle of the Summer, with the thunderstorms on the left and the calmly and warms colour tints of the sky on the right,to make the image so attractive and unique.I like the created depth from the wooden poles in the sea with the special appearance of the whole image to be fascinating.Well done.
Have a good afternoon,Danos

wow! Impressive! Love the cold/warm tones, this row of wooden poles giving depth and the generally flawless exposure. Congrats! For this and the baby of course!
Sergiom (80830) 2011-12-21 6:02
yquem46 (38752) 2011-12-21 6:05
All the ingredients for a great shot, the colors of the sky and sea, the long perspective of the posts in the waters, the mild light and of course the lightenings in the left BG
Have a nice day
All the best

the only word it comes to my mind watching this photo is:WOW.This is a masterpiece. This is also a good proof of the bad weather can be extremely photogenic on the pictures.Prolonged exposure time made we can admire three lightening at the sanme time and the water looks so soft and dreamy.
As I see from your note, big change awaits in your life.So I wish all the Best for you and your family.

Prachtig foto werk, bedankt.
Prettig Kerstfeest en gezond 2012.

First of all, congratulations to you and your wife for a soon to be mommy and daddy.
I'm happy to know this is the last time you are goind to shoot at the beach durring thunder storm. While the photo result is surperb, you're life is worth much more, especially you are soon responsible for a child.
What can I say, but to admire your passion for photography and the result of this shot is definately fantastic. One that I will be really proud to call my own. I have attemp to shoot from inside the building, but the timming is very difficult. you got it just perfect. The atmosphere is dramatic and the color and light perfectly manage. My hat off to you.
Cheers, and wishing you and your family a wonderful Holidays.

Hello Robert, Congratulation for this magnificent piece of photography & for the good news that in several months you will be a father. I don't think I can add anything worthwhile to what has already been said except to say that loved your note & I would also love to spend a day or so with you shooting some landscapes/seascapes & also spending some time with you on your computer afterwards, I know I could learn a lot from you. A beautiful image that is unusual, interesting and eye catching, compliments, another stunner.
Best wishes for 2012

Fantastic! This photo is an example of what I look up too. The colors, scenery and photographic elements are carefully placed and composed. Your expertise in handling long exposure is very well evident in most of your photos, especially this one. I really love it! How I wish I could come up something as great as this image this 2012! This is simply inspiring! Cheers to more stunning and breathtaking photos this year!
Just my curiosity, what kind of filter did you use for this?- the colors are simply amazing! And how long was your exposure time as well? hope you don't mind.
macjake (68510) 2012-01-03 13:56
wonderful looking photo.
I would like to know how long of an exposure time this was...i guess the lighting struck during the time lapse right...thats how its done?
even without the lighting i still admire the photo.
personally, i think its the best you've posted so far - again, even without the lightning.
lovely colors and depth. a beautiful subject creates a beautiful photo.
josepmarin (58359) 2012-01-04 9:44
though this capture was very risky, you caught an absolutely impressive scene, in which the strength of the nature becomes evident by means of the lightnings over the sea.
Your image has a high quality and a great sharpness, besides a few delicious colors.
It's a masterpiece, and for this reason, I would have been grateful to see the technical information of the capture, in order to learn a bit the way of obtaining this spectacular result.
It's a superb work. Congrats!

bebbetto (40) 2012-01-29 12:28
This photo is a masterpiece. I think you set a long exposure with a neutral filter (ND8 or ND16 .. or more) to avoid to overexpose and catch the lightnings.
It's a pity that you do not say more about the camera setting.
Great shot, excellent framing
notrap (6133) 2012-03-15 14:34
only one word - perfect!

satyakki (660) 2013-03-30 9:39
I am late to view this but how's the baby? :-)
I was trying to look for the exif info of your shot but could not see one. My guess is that the exposure must be around 20 sec. I am keen to know for my own learning.
Well composed, nice light management, good POV.
Thanks for sharing.
jcpix (13930) 2013-04-30 14:34
Have I ever arrived late to the party on this one, or what!? I don't know how in the world I missed this gem, what an outstanding shot! The colors alone would make this spectacular, but catching the lightning...it's a striking image to say the least. Sorry for the pun, but it really does jump right out and grab my attention! How did you manage the color scheme in the sky, I'm fascinated by the smooth transition? Even without the typical trademarks of a tropical locale, this is another one that feels to be from that type of region. I'm not sure I can really expound any further on the beauty of this image from comments that have been made before me...so I'll simply say, compliments on a very impressive and inspiring photo! Thanks for braving the elements once again to share this incredible shot! Have a great day.

I just take off my hat... Fantastic result, excellent exposure. I love this composition too. No words! Superb!
