The narrow streets of Montpellier are a delight. Wandering one morning when few people were around we found this quiet street with a small boy near his home.
Montpellier is the eight largest city in France and capital of Languedoc-Roussillon. The area is well known for its wine production.

Hello Ann - Super shot, I like the contrasting areas of light and shade, the details on the façades, the string of hanging lamps, the reflections on the pavement - but - most of all the silhouette of the child! A lovely little detail and well captured. One of your best I think. Warm regards and take care. Rosemary

Good morning Ann,
You certainly have a wonderfully keen eye for a good photograph - and did so also when you took this one over four years ago.
The whole composition is perfect, complying well with the revered Rule of Thirds. The lighting is bold and I can imagine that at the time you took this, many photographers would have been put off by the strength of the contrasts in the lighting. But you have succeeded here extremely well - there's lots of detail seen in both the darkest shadows and the very brightest parts.
The picture has an almost monochrome appearance to it at first looking, but the tiny glimpse of bright blue sky at the top convinces us that this is indeed colour.
And, what can I say? The little boy, caught in a wonderful child-like pose (which is accentuated because he is virtually silhouetted and we can't see his features) is just the icing on the cake.

love the atmosphere in this composition, the little silhouetted boy is so effective. Wonderfully controlled light and sharpness make this so outstanding.
Have a peaceful weekend - Brian.

Lovely street scene. This is turning us back in time with the architecture and the innocence of the child. Great composition, perfectly presented!

this narrow and high street, with its old house ,is really splendid.I love the unity of pink tones, and I love this small silhouette of child, that makes the houses still higher.Magnificent.

J'aime beaucoup cette composition verticale. La rue étroite fait jouer les ombres et la lumière dans une belle danse joyeuse ponctuée par l'ombre de l'enfant.

pretty vertical composition of old the street of Montpellier.
Contrasts between the light and the shades are well balanced.
The little place of blue sky reinforces the side monochromic of the remainder of the scene.
And the little boy, who brings an element of life to the photograph, reinforces the quality of the composition.

these kind of narrow alleys are always good subject for photographers as they are so picturesque and have its own charm.Well-captured using a vertical format and it is also nice to see how the light&shade can influence the final result of a photo.Beautiful picture with well given Mediterranean mood.
Have a nice weekend

This is one of those images that one does not just judge on the fly. One sits back and lets it grow on you...and what a pleasure. Beautiful height and depth in almost monochrome (sepia) colour with wonderful atmosphere and petterns. And just that little bit of human presence. I could go on about the little boy arriving home and about the bit of blue sky at the top. And about the reflections and the shadows and the play of light.... This is really good, Ann. Well done.

a very good composition. Like the alley and the effect of morning light on the walls and the reflection in the path. The silhouetted boy is also very attractive as a focal point of this frame. Excellent vertical presentation. Tfs.

Back from a long week in Brittany, in time to celebrate your first anniversary on TE
I choose this one, with an excellent management, not an easy game here, of the high lights and the shadows
A nice street shot with the little kid playing an important role in the compo
Happy anniversary and nice WE

This street is familiar to me. You made a very beautiful photo, very well exposed. Excellent colors and neatness. I like this small silhouette which brings a little of animation. Bravo.
Have a nice evening

What a great shot, so typically French (b ut could equally be in Spain or Italy). These little streets are so characteristic but so difficult to shoot. You did a marvellous job with the light and shade, keeping the atmosphere and mystery at the same time. I like the almost duotone quality to the image. I know it's in colour but the light has rendered it almost sepia. The reflections off the pavement are the icing on the cake. Congratulations.
Have a beautiful day
Glint (5989) 2011-11-15 12:43
the little boy gives a sense of scale to these tall buildings. His silhouette is an echo of the shadows around and above him as the light plays a game of hide and seek.
Graal (94156) 2011-11-16 0:05
nice old backstreet here. Amazing mood in this image. Good vertical composition. I like the game of light with shadows also. Photo well done.
Have a nice day.

Hi Ann, Again the contrasting light is superb, a lovely daily life photo with a tranquil feel, well managed through-out, kind regards Wilson.
Angshu (53980) 2011-11-17 0:21
Like the abundance of pink-brown tones & the reflection on the shiny alley. The silhouette of the boy acts wonders to this image, as does the slice of blue sky through the brown walls. The hanging lamps create good focal points & I like the ornate iron railings as well! Good work!
tatadalou (4615) 2011-11-22 14:27
I like here the strong contrast between lights and shadows, and the silhouette of the little boy who stands in the deserted alley. The rendering of textures is admirable, both for walls and floor, which offers even a few discrete reflections.
It's very successful.
macjake (49296) 2011-11-23 6:47
well good Morning to you aswell!
It actually IS morning time as i'm writing this, and what a way to begin my day by viewing this beauty.
lovely combination on light and shadow, i would actually cut out the very top and remove the blue area, make the entire scene just the street and its architecture.
Its beautiful, it has so much elegance and class.
chriswhitley (2021) 2012-01-01 8:12
Hi Ann. A very nice atmosphere to this shot. The light is wonderful. I like the lack of people apart from the solitary child. Happy New Year. Chris
