These are piles of salt gathered together to dry out, before being picked up by truck.

extra tech info.. this was taken with a 24mm lens with polarising filter. There was an inch of water on the ground. It suffers from some vignetting (if this is correct term) in the corners, which I have tried to crop out or adjust with clone tool (badly I think).I just got the 24mm lens the day before I left and so I hadn't tried it out properly which was a bad mistake, as very many of the photos were unuseable. In laziness I neglected to remove the skylight filter before adding the polarizer, which is a bad mistake with this lens, I didnt realize until I got my films processed.
I used Fuji film and scanned from that.No other colour adjustments, but a few suble levels and curves.

Hi David
Graphical success. The compo with these details is well made, in a fine setting of light and colour. The background sky is simply excellent.

Looks fantastic... like another planet, or like a dream...

Beautiful! How did you get the sky so deep/dark. A filter I presume?

great!! I would though try to include something that would break up this rythm - something contrasting

Simply excellent! pls don't tell me u've used filter for the Parliament blue!...;)

A repetition of the forms and a play of cold color of more succeeded

Very good. Seems to be taken on a mirror. It seems you used a Polarizing filter, do you?

Very nice and deep colors. I particularly like the reflections of the salt piles.

Good and original composition here. Did you use a polarizer?

On dirait un paysage 3d généré aléatoirement par un logiciel. Les bleus très prononcés tranchent avec le blancheur des cônes de sel.

FAscinating subject, and a fine graphic compo you've got from it.

Hello,

That is a mysterious landscape! And the reflections are really great, it's like in a mirror. The balance between the sky and the piles is very good, and that dark blue to black contrasts effectively with the salt piles!

A12C4, see you

Seb

Excellent capture!! seems like this's from another planet...

This is wonderful David, an other worldly scene made understandable by your brief note. The repeating pyramids, most reflected in the thin film of water extending toward the distant horizon, all beneath the intensely blue sky, is as much a graphical representation as anything else. You likely used a polarizing filter to create that intense sky, or perhaps a gradient filter. The effect is very fine and you've framed it perfectly. Excellent work that motivates me to check out your portfolio and watch for you work. Welcome to TE.

By the way, I'd encourage you to include information about camera, lenses, filters, film type, tripods etc. for those among us who are curious about such things. I note that you list a camera. You should be aware that in the Equipment Profile you may list such things for inclusion with your photos. I learn a great deal from observing that information as I view images. Think about it.

Incredible David, this is a science fiction image! Or a shot taken from a satellite upon Titano... And is technically perfect, very, very accurate.
Compliments, really outstanding!
ciao, Giorgio

Fantastic picture with a good composition. Did you use a polarization filter?
The frame gives a broad feeling. Nice work, Eugene

tripod boss? Amazing canvas you have here, a real TE winner. Well saturated. polarizer? Must look good of the inkjet...

Great photo, all the superlatives have already been used.
Thanks.

It's a wonderful shot with a great composition and contrast of forms, textures and colors. The cones of white salt an its reflection in the soil in contrast with thta deep deep blue of the sky is just amazing.
Congrats!!!!

Fantastic image from another world. Wonderful graphic composition with stunning colour.

This one is out of this world! The reflections of that thion layer of water is beautiful, and I actually think the dark sky above it, gives it an even more alien feel.
It reminds me of the documentary: 'Die Salzmänner von Tibet', did you ever see that one? Very impressive document!

wow, it's incredible...seems like a different world, absolutely fantastic. I'm also curious how did you make the sky so dark. and i find interesting the contrast between your note about difficulties and mistakes and the overall effect :) well done :)

Very interesting ... Good composition and nice shades of blue. Excelent shot!!!

Lovely effect with the sky, Ive never actually seen anything like this before. Well done.

Fantastic world out there. It looks like a promo to visit your part of the world. I think that's one of the puposes of this site.

Woow, i see you are a genius for what i like in photography.Very interesting view, and of corse, beautifull.
I see in your gallery many pictures witch i like very much, because is my style: blue sky (pol)in combination with a white thing (snow or salt, or everithing else).U r in my favs list.

Wow, looks like it is from outer space but a beautiful outer space picture!

wow a strange looking landscape, a bit surreal. The polarized sky added to that effect. I love this.

C'est hallucinant, on se croirait dans un autre monde bon travail pour arriver à ce résultat.

great polarizing and DOF

wow! what a great scene and a great photo! in fact i am not bothered by all the flaws you mentionned. I see the final result and it pleases me a great deal!
Eric

nice picture. even thought the background sky looks bit artificial it suits well in the mood. looks like a scene from a scientific movie.

Hi David,
This is a beautiful and still very strange shot !
The color contrast between the white of the salt and the blue of the sky is beautiful.
The pattern created by the pyramids is intriguing : the point of view is very well chosen.
Bravo !
Amicalement,
Michaël

This is an extrodinary view with well captured reflections and the polorizer has worked well to make this more out of this world.I to had a problem with my 24mm and a polorizer filter when I was in Nepal. It took ages to adjust the images. However I have now bought a hoya circ polarizer which is thinner and does not give me this effect and I see they also do one with a built in uv aswell.

It's like landing on another planet. A fabulous landscape. I have been here myself but there wasn't the layer of water at that time. It adds an extra dimension to have the reflections of the salt piles as well.

David, vignetting or not this remains a great shot.
Composition is really great.
To avoid vignetting, as gren4, I bought a Hoya HSP-1 polarizer, it's very thin and so I can use it also on 12-24mm without problems (not so with the Cokin P filters...).
Bye,
Stefano

HI David,

Strange place but really well captured.
Great Sharpness and composition.
Your note is also interesting.
The contrast of colors and reflects are well seen.

Excellent picture.

WOw, this is so surreal, it looks like a Dali painting, really beatutiful, I am speechless

Hola David. Una gran composición. Los colores y el efecto del agua en el suelo es genial. Me encanta el efecto de todos esos montones de sal. Muy buen trabajo.

Yeray.

hello David,
of all the amazing images in your Bolivia series this one attracted my attention right away.
The composition is simple but stunning. The colors are exquisite, excellent POV, the reflections of the salt cones are great.
I am running out of superlatives.:)

Una foto maravillosa, perfecta. El salar de Uyuni es un paraiso de otro mundo, uno de mis paisajes favoritos.

Saludos

Yuri

As a mineral industry person i see a lot of mineral workings, this is pretty unique and looks like a lot of human effort was put into this process rather than using machinery. Very effective photo.

Hi David, amazing picture. The altitude is visible, you took an POL filter and the sky and salt all are cast into blue. Perfect POV and DOF. I have a similar pic from Argentina, however they created bigger piles of salt and than filled by hand bags of about 100 pounds. Thanks for sharing, Cheers, Michael

The polarization is a bit much but I still am drawn to this image. Using a polarizer at high altitude can have detrimental effects by over darkening a sky. Great shot.

Yes, it holds the middle between a dream and a newly discovered planet...the sky convinces me it has to be that planet...

The blue in this picture is so deep ! Fantastic picture.

Bonjour David,

Great picture. Colors are perfect, and the compo is very graphical.

I love it.

Best regards, Laurent.

Hi David
Your photo of the Colchani salt piles in wonderfull. Reflects on water are amazing. I have made a lot of digital shots from this area and I got the same effect with polarizer (a little bit less contrast than velvia). The big difference is the piles are misaligned and low level of waters
Cheers
JP

Hi
There is a mistake in the location of this place.
Please change Oruro > Salar to Potosi > Colchani
Thanks for sharing, JP

What a picture!Great wok.The piles of salt look like small mountains of ice.
The white and blue composition of the picture is nice too. and very nice framing indeed.

Superb colors David. nice conical shape and the reflection in the water. Looks like a different planet

David another great shot!
Was there on 2000 and still remember this great place.
Great composition and sharpness.
A smile
Luca

Hi David
Great shapness and really nice reflections. Good use of the DOF.

This is an outragously good shot! When I see this sitting with 99pts I think it is my duty to put you over 100. The repetition of the salt piles is a great theme for the shot, but what really gives this one it's kick is the super intense colours! That blue is amazing! I like the long horizontal framing too. Congratulations!

very nice shot! i like the contrasts

David,

Awesome lunar landscape. Loved the pic a lot.

Uma imagem surreal e muito atrativa, com cores e formas se harmonizando porém criando um impacto visual inquietante com o ceu quase negro acima. Great work David.

Hi David,
great shot, nice POV, sky well filtered.
Well done.

Hi David,

I couldn't add anything alse interesting about that shot. I consider it as perfect. It's wonderful!
Nice job, congratulations!
Quenitin.

The clarity and wonderful gradient of color from bright white to deep blue is great. Well done.

David
I have commented on pictures from this location taken by several photographers. They all have one thing in common, they have captured a unique landscape in stark beauty. Your image captures the pure white against a deep blue polarised sky. Superb.
Regards Colin

Hello,
Amazing "simple" view.
Excellent framing and point of view.
The sky color is great.
Greetings.

Wow, impressive... Sea of salt, nobody around... Perhaps it would have been even better with a guy working or walking, to understand the scale of the picture...

Very interesting photo of drying salt. Well done!
