Photographer’s Note

De Sint (the Saint) is back again. Every year he is celebrating his birthday (for 1700 years) in Holland with the dutch children and every year somewhere in November on a sunday afternoon he is arriving by steamboat from his residence in Spain with his white horse and his black servants (who are all named Piet - black Piet and dressed like 16th century pages).
They (the Piets) are carrying tons of sweets and candy throwing it around while Sint Nicolaas (Sinterklaas)is waving to the children.
The children sing Sint Nicolaas songs (There are a lot of classics among them with names like 'Look yonder comes the steamboat' and 'Hear who knocks there children')

I must say it is fun to try to explain in English what a traditional dutch celebration is about.
In the 19th century dutch immigrant brought the Sint to the USA where he was transformed in a northpole resident with rendeers and sleigh. The black servants disappeared and also his bishops clothes, though the red and white stayed.
