Photographer’s Note
A warm afternoon light warms the wall of an old warehouse in the harbour area of Annan.Once, Annan's port was busy but no longer. Left to decay, in recent years it was partly renovated but has been left again to deteriorate once more. Now just a place for youths to race their cars and meet up on the renovated roadway that leads nowhere except to an old rotting boat.I had set myself and other Annan photographers a challenge, much in the style of the scav hunts that TE used to host (remember them ?). For November we were to photograph the places in Annan that we liked best and least. The old harbour is so run down that I decided to photograph here. Perversely though, the sun on this wall makes it almost attractive, doesn't it?, despite the graffiti. The seat was part of the renovation scheme. I have never seen anyone sit there and as I have already said, only youths in cars meet here. Recently a police operation targeted these cars because they can cause a nuisance to people living close by.See here for another picture of the harbour. This wall can be seen top left.
ps What is missing from this graffiti is the letters AMP. Amp is seen scribbled throughout Annan and I understand stands for Annan Mental Posse.

Hello Bev,
What an irony that the most terrible place turned out a bit beautiful, in some way. Yes, graffiti in a suitable place, especially with layer upon layer, can be rather attractive, sometimes fantastic works of art, even if unintended. There is something appealing with the warm light upon this rusty-coloured wall and its unintelligible messages. Thanks to the drawingboard-planners for the bench.
Regards,
Gert

Hi Bev,
It is very graphic with three stony sorts of design(on the ground and the wall) and this bench with his "twin". The unity is given by these warm red. This port is certainly a magnificent place to make photos.
I like a lot this photo.Bravo!

It is certainly picturesque in that warm light, Bev. A happy chance that the big blue word is in the right place to balance the seat.
It does not look like a comfortable seat - maybe it's no surprise that it was not used.
Does your public library provide internet access? Wouldn't it be great if the graffiti artists were to join TE and critique this photo!
Have a pleasant evening,
Winifred

Hi Bev,
This is quite a different photo, but indeed a photo for TE! The long shadow of the bench makes it cover the whole picture, and the wall behind has a marvellous pattern of the differently coloured bricks. I like the warm light over this scene and the added colours of the graffiti.
Kind regards
Gunnar

Dang, Bev,
you are so right. That light does almost make that shabby looking wall seem nice. Your note is very well written and echoes around the globe, I think. I see it everywhere I go around my part of the world. Sad, huh?
You managed that light beautifully and the color is so warm and ... comforting, maybe. The detail is excellent and I love all the great lines and shadows and textures. That's a really emotional shot for some reason. Superb! Many thanks and warmest wishes,
Shelly

This photie is pure dead mental, man!
Actually, Bev, this is a fine photograph with lovely autumnal colours and great shadows cast by that rather spartan metal seat. The textures of the brickwork and the cobblestones add to the appeal, no doubt helped by the low oblique lighting from the late afternoon sun.
I'm not sure what the text says but the colourful letters emblazoned on the decaying wall add to the appeal of the picture.
Pure dead brill!
Best Wishes,
John.

Hello Bev!
Very impressive photo, a daily life scene even without people, the human presensce "is" there! Great composition and framing, magic warm light, excellent light management!

Hello Bev,
The low sunlight bathes the wall with warm colour, and throws the shadow of the bench almost horizontally on to it.
An interesting collection of graffiti in various colours – sadly, not much sense can be made of any of them.
The top of the bench and its shadow lie along a line of thirds, and make a strong anchor for the composition.
Attractive textures in the cobbles and the bricks and blocks in the wall.
I look forward to seeing more in this series.
Kind regards,
Peter.

Hi Bev,
this is a very interesting and at the same time exciting composition! The image shows that there is a certain beauty in all stages of decay, especially in such a warm light. But you show us also a dark side, it is the irrelevance of these graffitis. The life mottoes of the members of the Annan mental posse are obviously reflected here! TFS!
Warm regards
Harriet

Hello Bev,
I'm not a fan of graffiti but just have to accept that this is a most attractive shot - attractive in that it draws you in!
The colours, with the warm evening sun, are glorious! Add to that, the shadows, the textures, the patterns and the composition and, you have a wonderful work of art!
Well done my friend!
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)
