Photographer’s Note

The place, where this newly built memorial is located, is called as Marshal Konev’s Hill. In 1943 there was a command post there, from where Ivan Konev, the commander of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, directed a military operation for liberation of Kharkiv city from fascists. Then there was not the forest, which is seen in the background of the picture, and Kharkiv was visible very clearly from there. The command post location allowed seeing the Soviet and Nazi troop actions for successful leading the operation, which ended on August 23 1943. This date is Khirkiv’s main day.

In the picture you can see the Chapel of St. John the Warrior, the Obelisk for Honor of Lost Soldiers and the WW II Museum.
