Photographer’s Note

Hi TE friends,

This picture was taken when I was arriving from a small trip to Trafaria, in another side of the Tagus River. Trafaria is a Portuguese town and a parish, fishing village, located in the municipality of Almada. It has a population of 5,946 inhabitants and a total area of 5.83 km².

I was there with friends to enjoy some snacks, eating clams and barnacles accompanied by a delicious white wine.

On right side you can see the Monument to the Discoveries and Belém Tower

Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos) is a monument that celebrates the Portuguese who took part in the Age of Discovery, or the Age of Exploration, of the 15th and 16th centuries. It is located on the estuary of the Tagus river in the Belém parish of Lisbon, Portugal, where ships departed to their often unknown destinations.

The monument consists of a 52 metre-high slab of concrete, carved into the shape of the prow of a ship. The side that faces away from the river features a carved sword stretching the full height of the monument. It was conceived by Portuguese artists, architect Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida as a temporary beacon of the Portuguese World Fair in 1940. The Monument to the Discoveries represents a romantic idealisation of the Portuguese past that was typical during the regime of Salazar
Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) is a fortified tower located in the Belém district of Lisbon, Portugal.

The Belém Tower was built in the early sixteenth century in the Portuguese late-Gothic style, the Manueline, to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition. This defensive, yet elegant construction has become one of the symbols of the city, a memorial to Portuguese power as it was during the Age of Discovery. In 1983, it was classified, together with the nearby Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery), as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is a fine evening atmosphere, well recorded!
The shimmering water is a very pleasing element, where the ripples reflects the light so nicely...
Strong silhouettes create depth, the boat balances the composition well!

Hello Aires,
Great capture; perfect pov and nice compo. The right part with deep shadows is somehow modern; whereas the left part is quite traditional and classic.
Nice light management of this "golden scenery".

Beautiful colours of an evening sky, Aires. All now is calm and the yacht is heading for home. The harsh silhouette of the tower would dominate the scene but the series of lamposts and masts on the right takes the eye across to the yachts on the left. An excellent composition.

A very poetic and atmospheric composition. I can imagine to be in that boat at the left arriving to Lisboa harbour at sunset, an event I'd like to live some day.
The composition is really very well built and exploits very well the beautiful colours and atmosphere of this sunset sky and the silhuettes of the Monument to the Discoveries.
An excellent work.
