Durian, the king of the fruits, is loved and hated fairly. Where ever you go in Malaysia you will see the thorny fruit in the market, so also at Alor Star’s Pasar Malam. Either you like it or you hate it. For a lot of people the smell of durians is “stinky” and “repulsive”, that they are banned in many hotel rooms in Malaysia and in Singapore Durians are forbidden in public transports! For those who enjoy durian, they consider the smell as “aromatic.”.

According to specialists some of the best durians in Malaysia come from the durian orchards in Balik Pulau, in the southwestern part of the island Penang. However this verdict is open for discussion. Tastes should not be discussed. The Malaysian duran fruit is more creamy then its counterpart in Thailand, where the durians are rather hard.

Durians are considered heating by the Chinese. Further you should never eat durian and drink alcohol, that could be very hazardous to your health. Some people already have died when consuming bier after durians.

Bonjour Urs,
Je n'ai jamais mangé ce fruit, et je ne connais pas l'odeur non plus. Peut-être que son odeur ressemble à celle des fromages français qui sont pourtant si bons ?Ici, nous ne trouvons pas ce fruit sur les marchés, car peut-être a-t-il du mal à supporter le transport longues distances ?
Très jolie photo, très nette. Je vois que l'on fume beaucoup là-bas hélas.

one more daily snapshot of the daily life of Malaysia with the 'Drian' fruit to be between the two fighters.The aroma smell, until to repulsive and banned it from many hotel rooms in Malaysia is a great distance.Lovely these informative notes from the life and taste of the people.

Olá Urs, I don't hate durians but I can't say that I like the taste of it or its smell either. It's funny the popularity of this fruit. I suppose it could be used as a weappon in war... ;-) This is a very nice portrait. Again, the flash overexposed the white shirt and hat of the man at right but it doesn't matter because I enjoy everything else, including the guys looking at you in the background.

Personally I make a pass on the durian, like I do on balut, gamalost and other not so delicate stuff!
But they say the taste is not like the smell, not that I understand how that can be hehehe...
A fine documentary from the market, where the smoking rate is 100%..!

lovely capture of people selling durians. Well shown in good light and the environment is genuine. Those sellers with cigarettes hanging on their lips is very common.
The art of opening is well depicted too.

Thanks for so interesting and perfectly illustrated information about this exotic and yet little known in Ukraine fruit. Very informative and high-quality picture, making me willing to taste durian. Now this is quite easy to do here, although people beware of buying it, maybe because its name is similar to the Russian word "durman" meaning a Jimson weed or a thorn apple, which are poisonous. Anyway, your picture and commentaries are excellent.
