Photographer’s Note

This picture is taken in Riddarholmen in central Stockholm towards Södermalm, one of central district in Stockholm. The buildings in Riddarholmen are Östra Gymnasiehuset (Eastern Secondary Scool House) and Västra Gymnasiehuset (Western Secondary School House). The history of Östra Gymnasiehuset dates back to medival times, but the building got its present appearance in the 1640ies (also called the Banér Palace in those days). The buildings are connected by a pass-way to Västra Gymnaisehuset that was contructed in 19th century for the Stockholm Secondary School. The architect was Johan Fredrik Åbom.
Södermalm or Söder (the South) is a large island that in the past was called "Åsön. However, the name Södermalm is old. Already in 1288 "Suthraemalm” was mentioned in letter written by Bishop Anund of Strängnäs.

The red boat seen on the other side is Röda Båten (the red boat) that was constructed in 1914 and in the past the boat t used to be a cruising ship on Göta Kanal ( a canal contstructed in the 19th century and connects Söderköping on the Baltic Sea with Gothenburg on the west cost via the the lakes Vättern and Vänern and the river Göta Älv) Today the Red boat is tied up at Söder Märlarstand the quay and street along Riddarfjärden (the Knight’s Bay) and is a youth hostel.

The church is Maria Magalena Kyrka (the Maria Magdalena Church) The construction of the church started in 1588 and was finished in 1625. The tower in neoclassical style was added much later, in 1825.
