Photographer’s Note

Goes was founded in the 10th century on the edge of a river: de Korte Gos (the Short Gos). The village grew fast and in the early 12th century it had a market square and a church devoted to Maria. In 1405 Goes received city rights, and in 1417 it was allowed to build walls around the city. The prosperity of the city was based upon the cloth industry and the production of salt. In the 16th century Goes declined. Its connection to the sea got bogged down and in 1544 a large fire destroyed a part of the city.

In 1577 the Spanish soldiers who occupied Goes where driven out by Prince Maurits of Nassau. The prince built a defence wall around Goes, which is still partly present. In the centuries thereafter Goes didn't play an important role, except as an agricultural centre. In 1868 a railway was constructed through it, but this didn't lead to industrialisation. The agricultural industry remains the most important economic activity.

During the First World War seven bombs hit Goes and Kloetinge, even though The Netherlands were neutral, due to the mistake of a British airplane. In Goes a house at the Magdalenastreet was destroyed and one person killed. The Second World War didn't inflict extensive damage on Goes, but Goes was under German occupation until 1944.

Goes didn't experience much population growth until the 1970s and 1980s. Then, the city grew fast because of new districts like Goese Meer, Oostmolenpark, Overzuid and Ouverture being constructed. Goes is now the fourth economic centre in Zeeland.

New districts are in preparation, amongst them Goese Schans, Mannee and Aria, where 3,000 new houses are to be made available.

Oke, this is the city Goes. I was not there before and I must say thanks Daniel for photo's of it otherwise I had never visit it. I hope you like the photo.
And what about the camera I can say....wauw....

This kind of picture is really attractive . I like a lot (as many others , too) . What a wonderful clarity and reflection , in this one . And the architecture is interesting and beautifull . I suppose that it was not possible to get the entire mast in the reflection .

With the intensity of the blue Henk would be raving about the Velvia colors. The reflection grabs my attention - just a slight ripple on the water so that we know it is a true reflection. I also like how the water darkens the sky and reflections to add contrast to the scene. Well done again Jaap, it is a pleasure to experience Holland through your images.

Bedankt voor de foto van mijn 2e (moeder)stad. Ik heb hier 4jaar bij mijn grootouders gewoond tijdens de oorlog, in de Vogelzangsweg. Ik heb er nu nog steeds familie wonen en ga er met de regelmaat van een klok naar toe.
