Carcassonne is famous for its magnificent fortified town (cité), which is also the largest in Europe. Its history goes back to Roman times and during the 13th century it was one of the major Cathar strongholds of the area.

The fortress town, which was thoroughly restored in 1853 by the romantic theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.

We've been told that during summer holidays this medieval cité turns into overcrowded fairy-tale kitsch, but we enjoyed our stay very, very much and were truly impressed by this wonderful place and its fascinating history. Oh, the blessings of lousy weather and an off-season visit...

Carcassonne est célèbre pour sa cité medieval, qui est la plus grande en Europe. Son histoire retourne aux périodes romaines et pendant le 13ème siècle elle était une des bastions principaux des Cathars.

La ville de forteresse, reconstituée en 1853 par le théoricien et l'architecte romantique Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, a été ajoutée à la liste de l'UNESCO d'emplacements de patrimoine mondial en 1997.

Nous avons bien entendu dire que pendant les vacances d'été ce cité médiéval soit transformé en kermesse de kitsch, mais nous avont passé un sejour très agréable et sommes retournés vraiment impressionnés par cet endroit et son histoire fascinante. Ah, les bénédictions du temps moche et une visite hors-saison…
