Photographer’s Note
Quiet and shady street in the old town
The county seat, Győr is packed with heritage and sights not to miss. An important cultural and administrative centre this traffic junction is located at the confluence of three rivers, the Duna, Rába and the Rábca.
Roman Catholic church of Our Lady of Carmel, Carmelite, Győr
Designed by Martin Witwer and built between 1713 and 1725, this church is one of the most beautiful Baroque edifices in the city, thanks to its interesting ground plan with its unusually sited steeple and the carefully elaborated facade.
The masters constructing the church dedicated to Our Lady of Carmel (Kármelhegyi Boldogasszony) created a successful blend of Italian lightness and Austrian affluence. Martin Wittwer had already designed a number of churches in Austrian towns, establishing a true 'Danubian school' of architecture. Behind the splendid facade inspired by Il Gesu, the Italian style of its statue niches, statues, and ledges the artwork of masters educated in the Western school can be appreciated.
From the inside, the cupola placed upon the elliptic plan walls was painted only in 1908. The side altars placed into the side niches, however, were achieved between 1721 and 1725 based on Wittwer's plans.
All that typifies Baroque can be enjoyed here: gilt glamour, dramatic movement, a cavalcade of colour, and chubby angels. From the inside, pass the confessionary corridor to enter the so-called 'dark chapel' where the Black Virgin statue can be seen behind a forged iron gate.
The furnishing of the two vestries date from the 18th century, as do the pulpit, the organ and the pews.
Győr
I would like to introduce one of my favourite cities on Hungary on this photo series. The city from more reasons special. The wars did not destroy his historical downtown (the Tartar armies, the Turkish army and the German army in the World War II.). One of the most beautiful coherent medieval downtowns are visible in Győr on Hungary. Because of this anyway worthy to visit this beautiful city. Besides, the herm of one of the largest Hungarian kings is protected here. Unfortunately, we are not so lucky, than other European nations, our enemies destroyed our kings' graves in the wars.
Győr is particularly rich in ecclesiastical heritage. The episcopal cathedral holds one of the most valuable examples of goldsmith's work, the St Ladislaus herm that was made in the 15th century for the relics of King Ladislaus I. The sarcophagus of beatified martyr bishop Vilmos Apor (1892-1945) is also found in the cathedral. The treasury of the basilica keeps numerous values and its fine art collections are particularly valuable.
There are permanent exhibitions of the work of one of the most significant ceramists of the 20th century, Győr-born Margit Kovács (1902-1977), and of outstanding Hungarian sculptor of the 20th century, Miklós Borsos (1906-1990) who studied in the Benedictine grammar school. Natural scientist, traveller and ethnographer János Xantus (1825-1894) after whom the city museum and zoo were named also attended school here.
The thermal baths and aquapark provide the residents and visitors alike with an opportunity for rejuvenation and there are numerous possibilities for outings and walks. (Source: Vendégváró)

hello Georg ,
What a superb management of light ; the shady parts are superb . The perspective is excellent . It would be yet better if you've moved a little to the left , to get the church tower less close to the wall . But this is a minor point .

Hi George, this is an immaculate photo, the shaprness, perspective, depth and colour are all superb. I like the lines created by the street posts and the diagonal of the foreground building. Most impressive of all is how you have dealt with the extremes of sunlight in the BG and shade in the FG, something I have not yet learnt to master so am in awe of. Nice work, TFS, Lisa.

Hello George,
Contrasts of lights which are not always easy to manage on this photograph, but that you controlled carefully emphasizing this architectural heritage well. I like this choice of vertical framing accentuates the perspective to this splendid church. Well done George and thank you for the interesting note.
With all my friendships and very good Sunday,

Dear George
A fine perspective created here with the wall a fine lead-in. Good idea of this off-centre compo leading to the church in the BG. The exposure is perfect with sharp contrast between light and shade well handled. Good work my friend!
Regards
Angshu
