Madeira is aujourd' today an autonomous region of Portugal, which saw primarily tourism, while continuing to develop the culture of the vine, banana, and other fruit and vegetables exotic which knew s' to acclimatize to Madeira as well as in their own natural environment. Vegetation L ' archipelago of Madeira belongs to the biogeographic area of Macaronésie which gathers the Atlantic islands of the Azores, Madeira and the Canaries. Madeira measures 57km length on 22km broad. C' is a volcanic island, with the exuberant vegetation, and the very escarpé relief. It has a natural heritage of the most scientific interest, which was included by l' UNESCO on the list of the World Natural heritage: the primary forest of Madeira, Laurissilva, which goes back to l' tertiary era of the ground. Madeira is practically a natural reserve, two thirds of the territory are protected. L' island is marked out paths and of " levadas" , narrow channels d' irrigation built by the first inhabitants to recover l' water of the mountains. C' is also the paradise of the walkers.
