Pigeons feast at Kuan Yin Photo

Photographer’s Note

Spending time at the Kuan Yin Taoist temple in the center of Penang's Georgetown is a nice pasttime. There are not only the devotees milling around but also the pigeons. They have a good reason: Charities bring food boxes twice a day to the temple which are distributed among the less privileged locals waiting their for their daily ration. These mostly elderly people have no job or place to go.

The leftover rice as seen in this photograph is feed to the pigeons which really are having a daily feast and they obviously enjoy it.

Hi Urs!
I like the temple with the people burning the incense and the effetc of the smoke but you have made this photo a little different, by choosing a low pov and including the pigeons. Well thought!

Hi Urs,
I like very much editorial related photos. It tells how thing is elsewhere and unlike the "I was here" photo which is generally the " shoot & go" theme of guided tourists. This is a thoughtful composition exposing the winged friends milling around leftovers offered by the temple's devotees.

I have good memories to Georgetown and the Thaipusam festival.
Good shot of this chines temple.
You found a great low POV and the pidgeons are an interesting foreground.

Bonjour Urs,
Belle photo. Ici aussi en Bretgne, les pigeons pullulent car ils se reproduisent à grande vitesse, mais peu de personnes leur donne à manger, et surtout pas du riz. Je trouve que c'est un peu triste. Il vaut mieux donner le riz aux personnes qui en ont bien besoin, et qui n'ont rien à manger.

Love it, Urs. This is a wonderful angle, close to the ground and to the pigeon's world. There's a good interplay between foreground and background and the smoke spread in the air makes a nice effect. The closer pigeon at right doesn't trust you very much...

Hello Urs,

I never thought about feeding the birds around my house rice, they usually have to do with dry bread!
The low point of view works well here and f/13 gives sufficient DoF to cover the distance of interest...
A fine composition, where the picturesque temple and the smoke give an exotic backdrop..!

Hi Urs,
A lovely presentation of the daily life at a temple.
It was wise to include the pegions. Good natural colours.
The smoke from the incense and the ritual reminds us
of the spritual side of this image.

The composition is very nice here, in a shot taken from a low pov. More than an interesting figure, you show us a very uncommon architecture. Very nice one.
