Fjærlandfjord after the rain Photo

Photographer’s Note

Fjærlandfjord in the end of the day after a heavy thunderstorm. Here we see the end of this 40 km long fjord, one of the side arms of the mighty Sognefjord. My POV is from the tiny "book village" of Mundal, which is famous in Norway because of the numerous second-hand bookshops which can be found all over the village, the total amount of books being ~250.000, and I think it has the highest density of books per inhabitant in the world, maybe close to 1000.

Until 1986, Mundal and the whole Fjærland area was isolated from the outside world and could be only reached by boat. In 1986 a long tunnel was built connecting Fjærland to the Jølster region to the north, since 1994 a second tunnel connects the area to the Sogndal region to the south.

Fjærland is also famous for the first class Norwegian Glacier Museum located at the very end of the fjord, at the foot of Jostedalsbreen, the biggest glacier in continental Europe.

I was attracted to the thumbnail by the lovely lighting across the hillside; in the full size image it is even more magnificent. The vertical format is well chosen. The little boat is nicely placed and brings a touch of humanity to the scene. Lovely colours and very good clarity.

Hi Alexander.
I like this remarkable shot for its amazing light and very subtle rainbow, but you haven't forgotten about the value of a well proportioned composition based on the pebbly bank and the boats to create the foreground elements. You've brought out the detail in the shadowy areas in what I imagine must have been a fairly contrasty picture. So not only is there a fantastic fjord landscape in this place, but I can buy a book or two also.

the light is absolute magic, shots like this make me realise how lucky I am that I've learned a little about photography and can appreciate light and recognise when it is out of this world :) and as if the golden light wasn't enough, you get rainbow too! not fair :) jokes aside, fantastic photo, my compliments. the vertical formal also works well, in wider horizontal format the focus on light might be less precise.

I was just talking to a Swedish colleague of mine who organizes hiking trips in Norway and Lappland... seeing the Fjords is one of my greatest dreams, so far too expensive for me... so seeing this photo only reinforces that desire.

This is an outstanding image from this wonderful place. I was there this summer, but only for a few hours, unfortunately. The little piece of land and the boats in the foreground and the high mountainside in the background makes this a well composed picture. The light with the sunrays hitting several spots at the mountain and the fjord is really good, with the rainbow as a bonus. I like the colours from the brown and sand colours in the foreground to to the different nuances of green in the background. The colour on the water is amazing. Really good work. Thanks for sharing. Quelles superbes lumières Alexander,
magiques, puissantes, pleines de contrastes, elles boostent ces couleues naturelles et un ciel très pale qui ne méritait pas davantage de place dans la composition et tu l'as bien compris.
