A Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelária, a maior das Igrejas da cidade, é também um colírio para os olhos em meio a monumental e agitada Av. Presidente Vargas, é um local de tranqüilidade e paz em pleno centro da cidade.
Seu Estilo é um Barroco Tardio, já com indícios do Néo-Clássico, tendo linda fachada em cantaria, portas
ricamente trabalhadas em bronze e seu interior é revestido de mármore. Foi construída a partir de 1778, no local onde existia uma capela, mandada construir pelo casal de portugueses: D. Antonio Martins de Palmas e D. Leonor Gonçalves, em agradecimento a Nossa Senhora das Candeias, por terem sido salvos de um naufrágio e terem conseguido chegar ao Rio de Janeiro em 1600. Em seu interior está eternizada a história do casal, com pinturas que contam esta história.

Toda a pintura interior da Igreja é de autoria de Zeferino da Costa e seus discípulos Rodolfo Bernardelli e Castagneto, incluindo o altar-mor, onde quatro painéis retratam fatos da vida da Virgem Maria: o Esponsório; a Anunciação; a Purificação e a Ascensão. Sua decoração foi realizada em 1880, quando a Igreja ficou pronta. Sua cúpula foi erguida a partir de 1877 e dela participaram o arquiteto prussiano Gustavo Waehneldt, além de Francisco Joaquim Bethencourt da Silva e Daniel Pedro Ferro Cardoso, tendo sido este último o autor do projeto
definitivo. As portas de acesso em bronze com figuras em relevo são do escultor Teixeira Lopes. A Igreja foi
totalmente concluída em 1898.

Originalmente a Igreja estava colada a outras edificações e tinha sua fachada voltada para uma rua estreita, ganhou sua monumentalidade quando conseguiu escapar da demolição que se fez, quando da abertura da Av. Presidente Vargas, para felicidade dos que hoje podem contemplá-la.
