Photographer’s Note
A drought is an extended period of months or years when a region notes a deficiency in its water supply.
As a drought persists, the conditions surrounding it gradually worsen and its impact on the local population gradually increases.
Periods of drought can have significant environmental, agricultural, health, economic and social consequences. The effect varies according to vulnerability. For example, subsistent farmers are more likely to migrate during drought because they do not have alternative food sources. Areas with populations that depend on subsistence farming as a major food source are more vulnerable to drought-triggered famine. Drought is rarely if ever the sole cause of famine; socio-political factors such as extreme widespread poverty play a major role. Drought can also reduce water quality, because lower water flows reduce dilution of pollutants and increase contamination of remaining water sources. A few common consequences of drought include:
* Diminished crop growth or yield productions and carrying capacity for livestock;
* Dust bowls, themselves a sign of erosion, which further erode the landscape;
* Dust storms, when drought hits an area suffering from desertification and erosion;
* Famine due to lack of water for irrigation;
* Habitat damage, affecting both terrestrial and aquatic wildlife.
* Malnutrition, dehydration and related diseases;
* Mass migration, resulting in internal displacement and international refugees;
* Reduced electricity production due to insufficient available coolant for power stations; and reduced water flow through hydroelectric dams.
* Shortages of water for industrial users;
* Snakes migration and increases in snakebites;
* Social unrest;
* War over natural resources, including water and food;
* Wildfires, such as Australian bush fires, are more common during times of drought;
* etc..........http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drought

Splendid shot, Georgios,
The detail is superb and I like the way you have filled the top with the tree silhouette and the small reflection of it in the water below. Great light, lovely color and very good composition. Well done! Many thanks and warmest wishes,|

It looks like Africa not Greece! It seems to see those ponds where the animals go to drink...
It's a good composition with the big tree above which has a fine graphic effect and the cracked mud below with the pond and reflection. The colours of the sky and vegetation are not very natural due - I guess - to the strong light. But that could not be helped! (:-)
Warm greetings,

Hola Georgios.
Wonderful composition, nature can cause many things, sometimes drought sometimes floods. Very good reflection on the scarce remaining water. Good colors and frame. Your WS is also a good picture.
TFS.

Hi Georgios,
A very interesting and engaging note. The photo is also an interesting aspect on climatological changes. It seems like a paradox to have the dry ground covered with water, but as this obviously is the case here, we can just enjoy the fine reflections in this puddle of water.
Kind regards
Gunnar

Hello Georgios!
Although a drought is not something welcome, specially for long periods of time, your picture is very attractive and beautiful due to its vertical format and excellent sharpness, exposure, colors, pov and composition! The reflection of the big tree on that small pond of water was such a great idea and I really like the visual results of that!
TFS - congratulations!
Best regards,
Neyvan

Geia sou Giorgo,
The reflection of this very old tree in the puddle is very successful. I like the strucure with this clay ground that the water has not yet managed to dissolve. I made a WS in black and white, I find that it strengthens the dry aspect of the nature. But you are not obliged to like it!
Have a nice sunday

Good morning dear Georgios,
Wonderfull capture with a "great message" ! I'am afraid that we all will see many similar scenes in the future if the "humankind" does not take enough care about his own enviroment.
Both photographycally and informative, excellent entry.
Congratulations and have a nice weekend
Best regards

Hello Georgios,
I wish we could give you some of our rain - we have had more than enough in the last few weeks!
Your close cropping has really emphasised the problem. You have given the impression that the tree is reaching out its branches in a desperate attempt to gather up some much needed water.
The details of the dry and cracked earth are an emotional image!
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hi Georgios,
Interesting your view with a well seen contrast between this dry ground and the water, good effect with reflections, good choice for a vertical presentation.
