Photographer’s Note
Roman Catholic church of St James the Apostle (Szent Jakab apostol), Lebeny
Built from 1199 to 1212 this Romanesque church still preserves its original early 13th-century shape. Most of the current ornamentations and of the furnishings, however, date from a 19th-century refurbishment.
The three-nave basilican church captivates by its monumental walls made from painstakingly dressed ashlars and structured by narrow arched windows and slim wall columns. Only the towers and the apses are decorated with arcading ledges, somewhat resolving the strict geometric order.
The notion of ornamentation is focused upon the porch with its tiered archivolts rupturing the thick walls.
The same spirit governing the facade also pervades the interior. The vestibule above which is the gallery, as well as the naves and the apses of the sanctuary singled out by the triumphal arch are all connected by a light, transparent order.
The Jesuits refurbished the Romanesque church in 1638, and Nuremberg architect August Essenwein lead out in its renovation lasting from 1872 to 1879.
Lébény
The town's most prominent sight is the 13th-century church which preserves its original character to this day.
Today only the church standing on the village square remains from a monastery built by the Benedictines. Situated next to the military road the settlement has suffered much in times of war. In 1529 for instance it was burnt to the ground by the Turkish previous to their assault of Vienna, again in 1683, and in 1841 a serious fire raged there causing great destruction.
On the outskirts of Lébény towards the White Lake (Fehér-tó) the so-called 'Spring Lakes' (forrástavak) can be found, a series of natural ponds. Alongside their edge a camping site is available.
How to get there:
By public transport, the settlement is served by buses from Győr. The town shares a railway station with neighbouring Mosonszentmiklós, which is served by railway from Győr and Hegyeshalom. By car take the M1 motorway or Route 1. (Source: Vendégváró)

Hello George,
I like the point of view with the shady path with its dappled sunlight leading us towards the door of the church. The tree on the right makes a pleasing natural frame and helps counterbalance the mass of this imposing church. The sunlight across the façade draws out the tones and textures in the stonework to good effect. Very well done, thanks for sharing.

A really great and venerable building -in all its simplicity. Its sunlit facade here in contrast to the shady foreground emphasizes this impression in a wonderful way. A really special place ...

Dear George
Congratulations, much belated on your 800th post...as astounding amount considering you started not so early in this website. This is a fine regal Romanesque church, framed with good lead-in and perspective and having a good light. Good framing with the tree on the right. Congratulations once again my friend, and apologize for the delay

George,
Your composition is fine using the shaded path to lead the eye to the brightly lit church. The angle of the shot is great giving the photo depth and direction. The tree provides nice framing for the shot. The lighting and colors are fine as is the photo's shaprness.

Hello george,
The image describes a serene environment which is appropriate for the place. The lawn and the trees lead the glance towards the church, which has an original steeple roof. Light, colors, clearness, seem to me excellent. Cheer.
Have a nice day

Hello George,
A pleasant composition, where the church is nicely balanced by the huge tree!
Attractive play of light and shades, and the diagonal street leads nicely to the main subject...
The fine light renders great colours, DoF covers the scene well!
Greetings,
