Photographer’s Note

Amazing, yes? An American canal. It was a MAGNIFICENT day, though. 77 degrees, sunny, low humidity. So we went to the park along the canal and walked down the pathway through it. Oh, was it beautiful.

The Columbia Canal is the surviving canal of a series of canals built by the State of South Carolina in 1824 using the labor of Irish immigrants to provide a direct water routes between the upstate settlements and the towns on the fall line. It is on the Congaree and Broad Rivers in Columbia, South Carolina. It is the focal point of the Riverfront Park in Columbia. The canal is now used to generate hydroelectric power by the South Carolina Electric & Gas Co.[2][3]

The Columbia Canal is on the National Register of Historic Places, No. 79002392. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History has additional pictures and information,[4] and copies of the nomination forms.[5]

What a beautiful reflection. You could turn this upside down and barely notice the difference. Good light management and just the right time of day to capture this spot. 77 degrees eh? Sounds good to me.

Wonderful combination of autumn colors along with the lush green banks makes for a wonderful tranquil reflection in the peaceful waters of the old canal.
Here all the leafs are gone and the skies are grey.

Hello Shelly, I found the colour in this image very striking & was immediately noticeable, later I also noticed the excellent clarity & lighting, mirror like reflections & framing. A very beautiful scene, well capture.

Beautiful reflection and lovely autumnal tones. The late afternoon light picks out the buildings and tree trunks very nicely. The exposure of light and shadow is excellent, and the sharpness superb. I like the almost panoramic crop, too. Very nicely done.
