Photographer’s Note

oggi e' il 9 novembre e ricorre, come tutti i media sicuramente non mancheranno di far notare, il ventennale dalla caduta del muro di Berlino.
il 9 novembre e' tuttavia una data significativa nella storia tedesca: nel 1918 fu proclamata la repubblica; nel 1923 ebbe luogo il tentativo di colpo di stato da parte di Hitler e Ludendorff; nel 1938, con la notte dei cristalli, iniziarono i progrom antisemiti... quando il muro venne giu' il 9 novembre 1989 mi trovavo in Germania e in qualche modo non mi riusci' di pensare ad una casualita' - troppo importante era stata questa data fino ad allora nella storia tedesca per poter credere ad una coincidenza.
Berlino e' una delle citta' che amo di piu' e per questo vorrei dedicare le foto di questa settimana alla capitale tedesca.
la foto di oggi e' la scansione di un negativo Ilford - ho accentuato il contrasto perche' Berlino e', per me, una citta' ricca di contrasti.

today is November 9th, an eventful date in German history - so much that some historians have used the term "Schicksaltag" (fateful day) for it.
what happened today? well...
... in 1918 the Weimarer Republik is declared by Philipp Scheidemann
... in 1923 the Hitler and Ludendorff "beer hall putsch" takes place in Munich
... in 1938 the "Reichskristallnacht" marks the beginning of the anti-Semitic progroms
... in 1989 the Berlin wall falls down and ends German separation, starting a chain of events which will lead to the reunification of the two German republics.
I was in Germany when the wall came down and the idea of a coincidence regarding the date didn't occur to me for a minute.
today's photo is a scan from an Ilford negative of a few years ago. I increased the contrast a bit to make the image match my idea of Berlin - a city full of contrasts, and not only of the graphic kind.

puntuale celebri su TE questo giorno speciale, ma che meraviglia che eri lì venti anni fa, dev'essere stata un'emozione unica...io invece ero ancora un po' troppo bamboccio, però me lo ricordo. Mi piace la tua spiegazione del trattamento..contrasto forte per una città dai forti contrasti...bel risultato!

Hello Cristina!

I knew about all these important events in german history, but besides the falling of the wall, I didn't know they all happened at the same date. I guess this last one is so much more filled with positive feelings and hope at the end of such a disastruos century, that is puts a shadow on all the others.

Classic, but in it's own way a unique picture of the "Reichstag", representign, as you said, this contrast city.

funziona molto bene qui il BN, specialmente per il forte contrasto... Stadt der Kontraste, das stimmt sicher auch noch heute... ich war letzten Sommer wieder in Berlin.

An original way to celebrate the german events on this 9th of november.
Your point of view to get a strong graphical effect is perfect, and you've done a good use of this modern structure.
Your B&W conversion is perfectly managed, with great contrastes.

Amazing definition cris..there is a man running outside and the there is so much definition on him..i envy those who have had the privilege to shoot on film..and still do..

sad that paper and chemicals are hard to find locally here..else i would have joined the club..the small club..

la scena mi ricorda il film metropolis.
posso dirti una cosa... chissa' perche le foto in bianco e nero che provengono da pellicola sembrano avere una marcia in piu'.

Perfetta, cara Cristina, la tua scelta del B&W, per una commemorazione che, di per sé, deve essere priva di colore. Molto bella, inoltre, questa tua gente che cammina, e pare proprio così libera di andare dove vuole! Salire, scendere, correre,vivere in libertà. Brava, sai?

This is an incredible composition of the rows of people in this futuristic building and the glimpses of older Berlin through the windows. I could hardly count the number of interesting lines and shapes that can be found here. And then there is one tiny little detail that I love: the person running in the street near the lower right corner.

habe einiges von Dir versäumt, sind super Sachen dabei.. das hier sticht mir sofort ins Auge, die Parallelen zum Guggenheim Museum in NY sind evident.
Schöner dynamischer Bildaufbau, nette DEtails (wie der Läufer rechts unten).
