Photographer’s Note

Castle of Ray-sur-Saône is a stronghold of the tenth century and eighteenth century with classical style in Ray-sur-Saône in Franche-Comte (listed village "Small City comtoise of Character"). The private castle is in perfect condition and the park is open to visitors during the tourist season.

In the eleventh century the village belongs to the Abbey of Saint Vincent from Chalon-sur-Saone, which yields the count of Burgundy in the thirteenth century, sold by them to "Baron Otton de Ray" from Castle "de La Roche".

"Otton de la Roche" became Baron of Ray by marrying his cousin Isabelle Ray (daughter of Lord Ray Guy).

Otton built on an ancient Gallo-Roman oppidum perched on a spur overlooking the Saône, this castle has 14 towers (largest fortress County of Burgundy in the Middle Ages) in an area of 5 hectares. The park will be planted with the time of tree species from around the world: cedars, limes, Sophora, spruces, pines, Foyard, sycamore, ash and chestnut ...

Since Otton, the castle is transmitted in the family of the Dukes of Choiseul-Marmier then by marriage to Gabrielle Marmier with Count Hubert de Salverte and their daughter Diane of Salverte.

The castle was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), the castle will be razed in retaliation for the asylum offered to Gaston d'Orleans in the Shire (source to the discovery of France, 1988 Edition Reader's Digest ) and then rebuilt in its present form in the late seventeenth century and eighteenth century on the foundations of the original medieval fortress.
