Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) is a monument that celebrates the Portuguese who took part in the Age of Discovery, or the Age of Exploration, of the 15th and 16th centuries. It is located on the estuary of the Tagus river in the Belém parish of Lisbon, Portugal, where ships departed to their often unknown destinations.

The monument consists of a 52 metre-high slab of concrete, carved into the shape of the prow of a ship. The side that faces away from the river features a carved sword stretching the full height of the monument. It was conceived by Portuguese artists, architect Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida as a temporary beacon of the Portuguese World Fair in 1940. The Monument to the Discoveries represents a romantic idealisation of the Portuguese past that was typical during the regime of Salazar.

Bonjour Airès,
C'est une superbe utilisation de ce temps de brume.
Cette proue qui émerge face au phare est sublime.
J'ai bien aussi l'architecture tout à fait particulière de ce vieux phare.

The thumbnail doesn't do this justice. The fog adds mood, mystery & atmosphere. I likthe distant ship sculpture partly obscured in the bg. Good sharpness & framing. Obrigado!

Olá Aires!
Não me lembro de ter visto esse farol por lá!!! Nossa, como a gente perde quando fica pouco tempo num lugar!!!
Pelo menos, agora posso vê-lo nessa sua foto muito bem tirada, com um ponto de vista baixo muito bem escolhido, destacando-o na composição vertical, em que o nevoeiro tenta cobrir tudo! Lá ao longe, aquele famoso monumento també se destaca e o preto da pista cria um excelente contraste!
Gostei bastante!

Uma incrível e bela mistura de elementos de cores tão contrastantes como a pista e o fog lá adiante. O farol tem uma beleza especiel e ficou excelente nesse pov baixo. Parabéns.

Antes de reparar no Padrão pensei que fosse um farol lá para os lados de Aveiro ou do Porto.
Uma foto muito interessante, com o Padrão como se fosse um navio no nevoeiro.

gli scatti con la nebbia sono sempre affascinanti se ben fatti, ed il tuo è uno di questi. Ottimo il POV basso che mette in FG la strada, composizione perfetta col faro, interessantissimo, in giusta posizione nella scena. Un abbraccio.

atmosfera quasi mistica per via della nebbia e la grande solitudine.
Ottimo il taglio verticale che mette in ottima mostra il vecchio faro.

Ola Aires, we both seem to be in a lighthouse kind of mood :) Excellent vertical framing for this "double portrait". The lighthouse is very unusual and quite intricate with those red bands. I love the effect of the mist on the Discoveries in the BG and the black road provides excellent contrast. Nice job, TFS, Lisa.
