Photographer’s Note

A view of the interior of the church of Saint-Sauveur in La Rochelle. It is a stitch of two vertical images.

A church has stood on this site for many centuries.

Replacing an earlier XIIth century Romanesque Church, a Gothic version of the church was pulled down in 1568 during the religious conflicts that embroiled La Rochelle and the surrounding area. All that remains of this Gothic church is the bell-tower. Rebuilt for a third time in XVIIth century the church was burnt down in 1705 except for the façade. The present Church to be seen here was consecrated in 1718 and has long been the Sailors’ Parish Church.

A splendid night time composition of the exterior of the church was posted earlier this year by Joël Berthonneau. It can be viewed by clicking here.
