Photographer’s Note

The medieval monastery of Maria Laach with its famous abbey church - about 50 km south of Bonn - was built from 1093 to 1216 and it is - situated in a caldera formed after a volcanic eruption dated 12900 years ago. This caldera is filled with a lake of 3,3 km² and a depth of 53 m.
The abbey church with it's six towers is one of the best preserved romanesque buildings of Germany, especially because it never was altered.

My photo shows a view of the rather unadorned nave and in background the central apse with the unique hexagonal high altar ciborium from 1256 (please see workshop photo) - a canopy supported by columns. You also can see the grand mosaic of Christ Pantocrator, made in 1911 by one of the monks of Maria Laach monastery.

In workshop you can see two closer views of the apse and the ciborium.
