Photographer’s Note

I came across this family of Welcome Swallows in Yarra Bend Park. They were perched on a branch over the river waiting for the parents to come with food.

Welcome Swallows are common in the southern states of Australia. They eat insects which they catch on the wing, using their speed and acrobatic flying skill.

Yarra Bend Park is the largest area of natural vegetation near the City of Melbourne, the landscape varies from steep, wild river escarpments to open woodlands, formal parkland, playing fields and golf courses. It has over 16 km of river frontage, and superb views of the city and the Dandenongs from the higher areas.
