Photographer’s Note

View on Mourne Wall from Hare's Gap. The wall goes up to Slieve Bearnagh (727 metres). Mourne Wall is a 35 kilometers long wall that passes over 15 mountains of Mourne Mountains and fences off barren and desolate mountains. On average the wall is about 1.50 metres high and 0.8 to 0.9 metres thick. It was built from 1904 to 1922 by Belfast Water Commissionners to enclose the water catchment area in the Mournes. Its main purpose was to isolate the catchment area from the effects of cattle and sheep on water course. It brought too a very welcome employment at the time it was built ! The wall is a great landmark for hikers. The bravest climb the 15 summits by walking along the wall !
