Photographer’s Note

In the same 1200 year old network of temples as my previous photograph, this pahari lady was walking, and giving offerings to the deity of each mandir.

Having too little money to perform one of the grand sacrifices, she did most of the puja on her own. In contrast to the glamorous bhandaras and yagnas of the rich devotees, her simple devotion lies among the poor of India: an unnoticeable, charming, and meaningful love for a peaceful life. The small bag in her hand contains all she has to offer; yet, for some reason it dwarfs the massive wads of money that flow from the purses of the affluent to the pockets of the priests. Her simple sari lacks the gold-and-silk borders of those of the wealthy, but its warm glow in the morning sunlight leaves the glittered rich shimmering in the shadows.

Perhaps there is no better method of observing these details than photography.

My apologies for the slightly cropped temple at the right - I wish I had the entire structure in the photograph.
