Photographer’s Note

A spontaneous game of tag with a tyre which might be played by kids the world over - these kids are from the displaced Roma community who live next to Kosova B - one of the two main power plants for the country. They were rehoused from former workers dwellings nearby where they originally sought refuge during the conflict. Plemetina is largely populated by settled Muslim Roma and Serbian families and is consequently isolated in many ways from other communities in terms of services. The pollution levels of dirty coal/anthracite power generation on the doorstep is high along with the levels of poverty and unemployment but so is the spirit of these kids. They are so physically intelligent - I would love to do some dance or movement based project with them. The NGO Balkan Sunflowers has established a learning centre for Roma children in the village and my friend and colleague Paul Gent worked with them to paint murals inside the building this Autumn.

Our guide to the village, Sami Mustafa, is a local Roma film-maker who has always lived there. He has just successfully run the first Roma film festival in Kosova with Balkan Sunflowers.
