Photographer’s Note

São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão, is known as the City of Tiles. The Portuguese influence is evident not only on the facade covery of the houses, but also on the traffic lights, as shown in the picture. The tile, most of which came from Portugal, allows a better thermal insulation, making the interiors cooler in such a warm city.
