A view of the A51, also called Tangenziale Est, one of the 4 motorways/highways that ringed Milano, for a total ring of more than 100 kilometers.
In the foreground there is the entry n°3, called Paullese/Rogoredo/Subway Line 3, one of the 46 entry/exit in the system.

Inside this inner ring live today less than 2 millions of people.

A new ring is under construction and under project. It will be built in the next 10 years and will be a system of different motorways:

The Malpensa-Boffalora Link (18.6 kms opened in the 2008)
The SS 336, Malpensa-Busto Arsizio A7/A8 Motorways (25.8 kms opened in the 2001)
The Pedemontana, (87 kms from Malpensa Airport to Dalmine, close to Bergamo) - under construction.
The Tangenziale Est Esterna di Milano (33 kms, from A4 Motorway going south to the Melegnano A1 Motorway) - under construction.
The Motorway Link between Novara and Melegnano (50 kms, proposed)

The new ring will be long around 215 kilometers and more than 5.5 millions of people will live in the inner area.
Other 2 millions of the Milan Metro Area will leave at not more than 15 kilometers far away.
