Photographer’s Note

Evdilos or the four shades.

Evdilos is a town and municipality in the northern part of Icaria Island, 40 km Northwest of Agios Kirykos in Samos Prefecture in the eastern Aegean Sea in Greece. Its name means visible and freely rendered open horizon.

It is a new seaside settlement built after 1830 when piracy was completely stamped out on the island. Evdilos was the first capital of the island. Today it is the second port and the center of northern, central, and western Ikaria. Together with other settlements, it forms the Municipality of Evdilos and has 2,831 permanent inhabitants, as of the 2001 census. The municipality has a land area of 78.790 km², and is the second-largest of the three on Icaria both in population and land area. It shares the island of Icaria with the municipalities of Agios Kirykos and Raches.

The picturesque small port and the pier with the old mansions and narrow roads, the paved steps, and the traditional and modern houses form an architecturally interesting village. Evdilos may be the most architecturally traditional settlement on Ikaria. There is a fine beach located just outside of Evdilos.

Ο Εύδηλος, η παλιά πρωτεύουσα του νησιού, είναι το δεύτερο λιμάνι της Ικαρίας. Ο οικισμός είναι χτισμένος αμφιθεατρικά και με τα νεοκλασικά του σπίτια διατηρεί σε μεγάλο βαθμό την παλιά φυσιογνωμία του. Η ονομασία "εύδηλος" σημαίνει ολοφάνερος. Ο οικισμός, αν και συγκεντρώνει εμπορική και τουριστική κίνηση λόγω του λιμανιού του, είναι αρκετά ήρεμος.

That's a very nice and truly attractive photograph!
Sharpness is suitable to this image! Exposure is totally correct (I love the shadows of the small tables)! The pov couldn't be better and the composition is effective and eye-catching!

Hi, Danos. The beautiful curve of the port wall leads us gently into the picture. The tables in the foreground stand out well against the pavement and the white houses against the sky. The place looks rather quiet, but I suppose the photo was taken in the morning and the crowd arrived later.

This framing with the small tables and its shades in foreground, that introduce us in a nice scene of the port and the white architecture of this village, is very elegant and attractive at sight.

I think that only in Greece it's possibile to find such lovely small harbours with restaurants and bars all around the bank. It's so good to sit there and see the colours and reflections in the sea, the moored boats, the whitewashed houses, smell the marine air and enjoying the sunshine... dolce vita!
The well built composition here makes me feel like planning a trip to Samos!

What I have the clouds you have the islands with beautiful beaches and idyllic settlements, like the one in this picture. Greece is the best place for such shots, no question and you have an excellent eye to spot the right place to frame another excellent shot. The reflections on the water are assets to the composition. The tables in the foreground lead my eyes toward the houses and buildings which is giving depth to the photo. Yje nice blue sky is sending a light which has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Very creative framing!! The curve of the seawall, the iridescent water, the lovely village and the clouds nestled in between the mountains make a beautiful scene. The you add the four tables with their shadows making exclamation points in the foreground.
...and it is all captured with excellent sharpness and light management.

the rich blue sky indeed is very powerful in rendering this dramatic landscape. The white houses cater the beauty in a very special dimension, sharpness and details of this exciting colour contrast. The shadow of the round tables offer an exciting foreground subject.
To me, it is such a well thought composition and a well balance presentarion of light, colours and view.
