Photographer’s Note
A thousand miles into our trip from Sydney to Port Douglas we arrived at Hamilton Island. “Hammo” as it’s known is one of the premier holiday destinations in the Whitsunday group of islands. It has an extensive marina for permanent and visiting boats of all shapes and sizes. The workshop photo’s are of the marina and of course the “Pub”, where we spent three days getting our land legs back. A man is not a camel, and numerous frothing ales are part of the getting your land legs back cure.
It was here at Hammo that we met up with some mates from Sydney who were also on their way to Port Douglas for the Black Marlin fishing season. We decided it would be fun to travel together for the last five hundred miles of the trip.
We left Hammo together at 0530am, the weather was back to gray and overcast, with rainsqualls all around us. Just as we were rounding the top of South Molle Island, the sun broke through the heavy cloud and lit up my friend’s boat.
We were running at twenty five knots on our way to Hinchinbrook Island two hundred and twenty five miles away to the North. Only David and Brett were up, the rest of their crew were down below sound asleep.
The “Gorilla” made a magnificent sight as it muscled it’s way through the gray water.
In the background of the shot is North Molle Island, a slight course change to the North West as we passed the island put us on the rhumb line for the Northern tip of Hinchinbrook Island, it was a long but exhilarating run along the inner Barrier Reef.

Hello Peter,
I enjoyed reading your notes.
You sound to be having quite an adventure!
Your photograph captures all the spirit of your notes!
The surging boat is well placed in the frame to grab attention and guide inwards. There is terrific movement implied by the spray and the backwash.
Excellent composition and good depth.
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hello Peter,
A very nice shot. The white color of the boat (and of the water) arise very well in the image. This excellent FG give dynamis and rythm to the image, it give too a great dephet. The atmospher is very impressive with the color of the sea and especially with the superb sky very well colected. The moutains give a BG very graphic. An excellent photowork.
Have a nice week,
Roger

Hi Peter. This is so well crafted with the moody sky and the boat complementing the scene very well. Nice capture with fine details under the light that has great impact to the image. Superb framing with the boat and the splash so well anchored in the frame. Thanks for sharing and best regards.

Hello Peter,
What a great image - moody lighting and full of dynamism with the boat flying at full speed. The background hills make some interesting silhouettes. I like the lighting on the boat and the wake. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Pete, noice one here! Very moody shot and then this great white boat just jumps out at you from the image. Were you using a grey-grad filter on that dramatic sky? Nice use of shutter speed too. I like it. Love ya, Lisa :)

I am not a resort person Peter so Hamilton Island isn't on my list to visit.... however I can understand the need for a refreshing beer or 12! I would have picked it for an evening shot but wrong!
Great composition and the light on the boat that was heading out fishing is perfect.

Hi Peter. Really special light that puts the spotlight on the boat and the dramatic wake. The contrasts are powerful and the whole thing reminds me of a painting by turner(early stage).I would envy you if i didn't get seasick. I am a disgrace to the Dalmatians who were pirates during the Roman and Venetian times and who are important players in the fishing industry in Australia and N.Z. Regards. Klaudio.

Great light in this shot. I am (was) more a sailing man, but I have to admit that is a very impressive sight. The boat really jumps out of the frame.

The boat at full speed lit by that warm light while all around the weather is dark and menacious creates a fine image and a special atmosphere. Furthermore the diagonal created by the boats direction make the whole image even more dynamic and harmonoius.
Even if I prefer gliding on the sea at a more slow speed and with a silent way I can appreciate the intense marine scene shown in this photo.
Best regards,

Hello Peter,
I can imagine your fun and excitement as you travel north where the weather gets warmer, and the countless drinks of cold beers you enjoyed in good company. The photo in the WS looks typically like somewhere in SE Asia.
The soft localised light on the boat alone is just fantastic, otherwise you may get excessive glittering reflection from the water surface. The background is beautifully filled in by the breathtaking view of the islands and storm clouds. A marvellous photo.

Hi Peter
That's an excellent shot of a boat at full speed through the not yet choppy sea. The weather does not look to promising. I wounder how you could keep the horizon straight. I have tried such shots from a moving boat, but most of the time, the horizon is a bit tilted. Fine your shutter was set at 1/640 still you had to keep it straight, congrats you mastered it. The contrasts are fine with the white boat in the FG pointing the way to the horizon boosting DOF at the same time. High sharpness too. Well done
Best regards
Urs

Hello Peter,
I noticed this one yesterday but didn't have the time to comment...
It is an original/unusual image, where the subject is moving fast and I assume it is taken from another boat and under these conditions I'm impressed by the technical quality!
And the light is absolutely fabulous, making the vessel stand out on the darkish back...
A balanced composition, and the image would make a great commercial poster for any kind of related action merchandise!

Hello Peter,
I would have liked to make this image! The very localized light puts forward this impetuous boat, on a dark background of the best effect. The movement of the sea is spectacular. This image is a treat. The quality of realization is more than excellent! Superb ws also. Congratulations.
Have a nice day

G'day Pete,
So that is where you have been hiding out on the seven seas.
Splelndid dramatic effect from the powerful wake created by your marlin boat.
The distand islands and silver blue skies make the ideal backdrop to this adventure.

Hi Peter,
I can imagine the speed of that boat looking at the huge waves it makes. Short exposure freezed water drops nicely, but don't take away the feeling of power. All the stuff above the roof give impression of a wedding cake.

Hi Peter.
Good angle of view for this one, and the light reflected by boat and wake really make it stand out against the early morning gloom. The pink tones in the clouds suggest the dawn and make a nice contrast with the steely blues and the white. The dark Molle island is a looming presence and the very distant hazy shapes of mountains add a touch more depth. Very nicely done.

Andrew

Hi Peter,
I can feel the speed of the boat, just looking at the splash and wave it created. Beautiful compositon as our eyes following where the boat is going in this beautiful scenery. And the cloud is beautiful casting warm sunset light. Oh, I think I'm getting seasick. Gotta go away now :)

Hi Peter, This shows the raw power of such a fast fishing boat. The wave it leaves is a tremendous asset to this image. The boat is well positioned and the deep blue sea is very inviting. TFS. Murray.
PS Sounds like a great idea for the local trekers to meet shortly.

Hello Peter
The light is beautiful and your fast shutter speed effectively froze the water as the boat cuts through the water...excellent! The North Molle Island creates a fine backdrop with the clouds lit by the low light creating fine hues. The exposure is superb as well...fine work!

Hi Peter, I like all your recent postings, esp. Peace and Quiet and Lady Musgrave, but what sets this one apart is the brooding sense of drama, with the fragile white boat juxtaposed against a faintly ominous sky. Great shot.
