Photographer’s Note

Looking at this pic I have a deep feeling to be fortunate to portrait three refugees in the dark shelter.. in Siberia or any other land made of ice and stones, the least welcoming place for any human being..

The reality was less dramatical though the snow and ice outside anyway, forced everybody to hide in a warm place.. Shot was made at Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter in Cracow and the people came a long way: from Jerusalem, the Holy Land.

The faint light on the faces and the dark background remind me of some Rembraqndt paintings. Daring but beautiful light indeed.

Rembrandt would envy you if he saw this. It's one of those posts I'm not afraid to call photography; it makes us feel, think, it warmens us... it truly moves us. The most of the frame is taken by the 3 persons, yet somehow I feel there is no one there...

Przepiekne !
Nawet ogien swieczki nie jest przepalony, cos niemozliwego, i to bez zbednych szumow ani brudow, do zrealizowania moim aparatem, ktory zaczyna byc juz stary...
Piekna scena, gleboki nastroj, glebokie tony, nastroj taki kameralny, taki marzycielski...
Ale wiesz co ? Troche za duzo mi dolu, ale to juz uwaga na marginesie ;))) tego arcydziela.
Prawie tak piekne jak zdjecie dziewczynki z kotem we wloskim sierocincu ;))).

No to chyba musze znalezc pieniadze na kupienie nowego aparatu, bo wyniki techniczne zdjec nocnych z Lisbony sa u mnie zniechecajace. Byla taka sytuacja, w indianskiej restauracji, gdzie oswietlenie szlo glownie ze swiec. Byl stol, kolo mnie, gdzie siedzialy 4 osoby, w tym mloda, piekna dziewczyna na miejscu tej pani co tutaj pod sciana, i prawie ze na takim tle, nieco zielonym...Ja probowalam swoim 80 mm cos wykadrowac, bylo to trudne z mojego punktu widzenia, a nie odwazylam sie spytac, z moim "portugalskim". Dopiero na koncu, gdy zobaczyli moje manewry, okazalo sie, ze ojciec rodziny mowi dobrze po hiszpansku, i moglam mu wytlumaczyc, co chcialam zrobic : obraz siedemnastowieczny tej mlodej blondynki na tle malowidel sciany i w swietle swiec, ale oni juz placili i nie mieli czasu na pozowanie...Ale to co otrzymalam wstepnie, bylo brudne...czerwone bylo zarazone zielonym, no i niezle rozmyte...

No właśnie ... jakiego filmu ... zastanawiam się nad tytułem ...
Coś w stylu ... "W zwierciadle płomieni ... " ???
A może już jest ... i film i tytuł ... a ja nie oglądałem ... :-(

Great use of light, indeed a baroque taste in it, yet i would go for Georges de la Tour rather than Rembrandt :P

I know, i will sound like a stupid know-it-all after all those appreciations, yet, there is something disturbing me about the compo. Maybe the girl being so close to the left. I would like to see some more black space at the left of her face...

My main criticism would be the strength of the light source and the colour flaring but only really because of my desire to compare this to the quality of a classical painting.

I like the composition enormously - the attitudes of the three subjects and their placing in the frame works for me so very well - the girls face is quite extraordinarily beautiful in terms of the subleties of colour, light and shade although the shadows are a little green - the strength and character of the two adults also comes through so well. Not the perfect image but I am applying exacting standards to an image created by someone who i know is looking for something very special through her photography.

Piękna ta Twoja praca! Mam wrażenie, że patrzę na dzieło mistrza Rembrandta, a nie na fotografię. Niesamowite jest to światło oświetlające tę pracę jakby od wewnątrz. A zamyślona twarz tego mężczyzny, przykuwa uwagę co najmniej w tym samym stopniu jak to piękne oświetlenie.
Wielkie brawa!!

Hi Agnieszka,

Your work is remarkable and if not already, should be published in print (book series)... this is a contemporary masterpiece. I'm not going to offer any critique because your work is very humbling and way far beyond (above) workshop comment nor anything I could render...
