6 years on Trekearth Photo

Photographer’s Note

Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Businesses close their doors and everyone goes skating.
The Alblasserwaard tour starts in the town of Kinderdijk, a tourist mecca famous for its windmills. (Molentocht means windmill tour.) The Krimpenerwaard is one of the oldest polders in Holland, dotted with ancient villages, and you can skate through nine of them in a day. (Negendorpentocht means Nine Villages Tour.) You can read about the area's history in this Krimpenerwaard site.

Aside from the scenery, the joys of Dutch skating are the companionship of other skaters, and the delicious food served up along the canals. With so many skaters on the ice, you're guaranteed to find someone who skates at your speed, and gets hungry or thirsty with the same regularity.

Yes, 6 years on trekearth, is a long time. When I started here, on 17 October 2003 by Trekearth, Oh, yes did know something from taking photo’s but I was just a starter.
With making photo's, special for Trekearth and with searching a note with the shot, I have learn a lot, from history and from nature. When you look to my photographs you can see what kind of process I mean.
I want to say “ thank you”, special for my friends and all the other people who are looking to my photo work. Thank you all.

This is a fine shot for your dedication.
The angled red boat, in the f/g, sets the interesting context and is perfectly complemented by the people skating, at a parallel angle, beyond.
Excellent clarity and good contrasts between light and shade, cold and warmth.
I love the thought of people having so much freedom to enjoy the good things in life! Fancy, just closing up your business to enjoy a skate along the frozen canal! I applaud!

Aardig idee om dat te vieren met een winterfoto.
Ik vind de oranje boot zo prominent op de voorgrond mooi in balans met de zachblauwe lucht.
Het verstilde landschap krijgt een mooi accent met de beweging van de schaatsers.
Goed gezien.

Well, congratulations on this milestone, Jaap! A nice winter shot to celebrate it with. These scenes will be with you again, while we head into summer. Lovely rich colours in this one, and a well controlled exposure of the snow. Sharpness is excellent as usual.
You've made a long commitment to TE, and seems like you are sticking around even though many have left. It's still a good site, and needs the 'veterans' like you.

This is a fine winter postcard! The skaters and frost covered trees make this a perfect winter wonderland. The orange boat in the foreground add color as well as a nice sense of direction. The trees provide balance for the scene.

The Dutch cold channels, bring back for me in memory of images of childhood, with ponds cold in the Maine-et-Loire, and in 1956 the Loire entirely taken by the ices and which one could cross to foot. For the ice to be safe to skate on, the temperatures must get very cold there. Hallo Jaap,
Wat al snel koud voor dat deel van Europa, hier, althans in het zuiden van Spanje, de mensen nog naar het strand in het noorden is anders, als het koud begint te lijken, maar niet zo intens als die borden in je foto. Ik dacht dat het een eenvoudige verkoudheid, maar ik zie dat de rivier is zo hard dat je kunt schaatsen op.
Uitstekende compositie, licht en kleuren.

I wasn't aware you were in TE since that long! What an endurance! And what an abundance of wonderful photos!
Again here, like in most of your pictures I must notice and appreciate the special light which gives a brilliant appereance to the lovely winter scene. The composition is well thought of, with the red boat in the fg which at the same time contrast marvellously with the white snow and create a fine sense of depth. But the eye is pleased even with other interesting and fine details such as the skaters, the sleigh and those beautiful cottages in the background. Sharp and incisive with a special atmosphere.

Hello Jaap.
Congrats on your latest milestone. Nice shot to mark the occasion too. Central Otago down the bottom of NZ’s South Island is the only place in NZ that gets natural ice thick enough for skating and it too only gets enough every few years. Nice light and colours and good diagonal composition. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations for the anniversary! I commemorated my 3rd anniversary less than one moth ago and I remember well that you were one of the first members whose work caught my attention. I couldn't dream then that I could have mingle with such great photographers. I hope I have learnt more than you here, as I have just gone looking at your early posts and their quality was already excellent to my eyes, although I can notice an evolution. :-)

It's not easy to critique your photos as they always look so perfect that it is hard to find anything useful or new to say, so, considering that this text is already long, I'll just say: great compo and light, I like the touch of surrealism of seeing people moving on the same surface of the boat, whose colour adds much punch.

EEn beetje laat voor een verjaardag, maar ik heb een excuus, ik was onderweg in de Loire streek en kreeg een indigestie van het kastelen kijken. Hartelijke gefeliciteerd dan toch, zes jaar is een lange tijd. Ook ik heb er 6 jaar opzitten, met mindere kwaliteit weliswaar, maar toch ook met enthoesiasme. En ook ik heb veel geleerd, ondere andere van jou. Dit is ook een prachtige foto met schitterende kleuren. Jaap ik wens je nog vele prettige jaren toe hier op TE en hoop dat ik nog lang je kunstwerkjes zal kunnen bewonderen.

Great presentation to underline your 6th year on TE.

What a wonderful set-up to skate around! I just love the frost on tree branches and covering every flat surfaces. Good light that conveys a nice mood. The boat in the foreground is very photogenic and colour perfect.

The angle of view is absolutely fabulous, showing the intersection and the almost surrealistic wide space.

wow, 6 years! That's a lot of time here, Jaap. Even if lately we both have been much less active. Well, I've been always an admirer of your work and progression as a photographer and I hope that I can continue to follow your incoming photos. The square format even won your nickname and that's a big impact in a comunity like this. Congratulations and good choice of image to comemorate. This rare ocurrence is something I would love to witness one day and I just want to jump over that boat and sliding with everyone.
