Nafplion: Window view mix reflection with bougainvillea

Enchanting Nafplion, probably the most beautiful town of Greece, puts a spell on everyone who visits it. It is a unique city, which combines the medieval atmosphere of the old town, great beaches in vicinity and easy access to important archeological sites, such as Mycenae and Epidaurous.

The region has been inhabited from the 2nd millenium B.C. and Nafplios is its founder according to the myth. The city’s predominant mythological hero was Palamedes, who took part in the Trojan campaign. After the decline of classical Greece, Goths, Slaves and Albanians seized the town for a short time. Then the Byzantines moved in the city, which remained under their rule until 1213, when the Franks captured the city. From 1389 to 1540 the Venetians ruled Nafplio, to be followed by the Turks, who ruled the city until 1686, when the Venetians recaptured the city, only to lose it again in 1715 to the Turks. When the Greek revolution took place in 1821, the people of Nafplio rose and, led by Staikos Staikopoulos, laid siege to the town’s castle, eventually seizing it in 1822. In 1828 governor Kapodistrias made Greece’s first capital and in 1833 the city welcomed king Otto, Greece’s first king. In 1834 the capital was transferred in Athens and Nafplio moved off the spotlight of politics, gradually becoming a famous tourist resort.
