This is a picture of previous winter .

History of the place of the picture:
Although Hoeke doesn't have many inhabitants nowadays, it used to be a genuine town with town privileges, a town hall and a port. This little town on the Zwin estuary was founded in the 13th century by traders from Hamburg, Lübeck and Bremen. The church was built in in the 13th century and until that time, Hoeke depended on the church of Oostkerke (as were several other settlements in the region). This place had the importance of a little harbour and was very prosperous in the 14th and 15th century and had a market for cereals and salted fish. When the period of prosperity came to its end, the small town of Hoeke merged with Monnikenrede and Damme in 1594.

Hi John,

The trees covered with frost are framing well the canal. The point of view leads our eyes to infinity which is giving depth amd perspective to the composition. The reflection of the light on the ice and snow is enhancing the colors of the scenery. Well done, have a nice day.

first i've got a shock, is it already winter? Then i wrote your note, puhh it's still autumn.

The clarity of your picture and the depth are amazing.
You can feel and hear the crackling of the frost. The diagonal of the canal leads the eye in the picture and there the view is lost in the deep. Superb work. TFS

Very, very good John,

the frozen trees make this place looks like the fairy tale land. I'm amazed by the soft light (actually the whole scene is in the shade) and yet the whole image reverberates with light, and by the extreme clarity even in the far out distance. Here only very rarely you have those atmospheric conditions. The composition is really very well thought, I should say the best to give the sense of depth.

A wondrous and beautiful winter time picture. The angle and perspective, of course, are superb as usual. I like the 'warmth' that comes from the bright blue sky and the hazy brightness at the far end of the canal. But mainly it's the long shadows of the morning sun falling across the canal that make it such a pleasure. Superb work and a reminder for you northerners of what is to come again soon!

même si l'hiver est froit et redoutable, on l'attend avec impatience pour réaliser ce genre de photos un peu surréaliste dans les lumières.
Le givre sur les arbres est toujours magnifique surtout quand on saiit le capturer comme tiu sais si bien le faire.

Een hele mooie winterplaat, kan niets anders zeggen. De kou straalt er gewoon vanaf. Goede kleuren voor zover die aanwezig zijn en erg mooi schoon en scherp licht wat je goed hebt laten uitkomen in deze foto. Mooie compositie ook met de bocht in het kanaal en de bomenrijen die diepte creëeren.

so this is your previous winter? It looks a lot like what we have here right now (except there's no blue sky..)

This is the kind of shot that shows winter from its attractive side. The frozen river with the strips of light on it leads wonderfully through the shot and into the depth. The trees and reeds clothed in ice look strong and defiant. With that blue sky to top it off, it's a perfect winter shot!

Another superb photo exhibited in TE, the frozen leaves and the canal covered by an ice sheet creates a good contrast especially when all is lost in the horizon between the trees, the depth effect is very good. Good POV, soft colors and frame. A beautiful winter scene.

Un canal glacé mais je pense qu'ici la faible épaisseur de la glace ne permet pas de s'adonner aux joies de la glisse comme tu nous l'as déjà montré... Encore un très belle perspective avec ici une lumière tamisée par les arbres que j'aime beaucoup. J'espère que cet hiver sera aussi beau. Un vrai régal pour les yeux, merci John.

This is a great winter scene. The frozen canal leads the eye through the scene nicely. The play of light and shadow is great creating contrast throughout the scene. The repeating pattern formed by the trees along the bank give the photo a sense of direction. The blue sky provides nice contrast for the icy scene.

Hello John -

Such stark beauty - WOW! I really like the monotones throughout this scene and then capped by a beautiful blue sky. While I lived in England for three years in the 1960's I don't remember having such deep cold that the canals froze like this in East Anglia. I remember frosty days but nothing like this. Beautiful!!!

Really wintry! You shouldn't post it as it risks to call the glacial cold earlier. :D
As usual, the compo is first rate, you explored ery wisely the "orientation" given by the canal and trees. The light of that clear day is equally wonderful.
