Cofete and the adjoining Barlovento are the places more difficult to reach of all Fuerteventura.
The Jandia peninsula (extreme south of the island) is perfectly in the direction from where blows the wind so the east cost is (relatively) calm and called Sotavento (protected from the wind) while the west coast is exposed to the wind (Barlovento). In this way thousands years of powerful wind created a unique spectacle in the world: the mountains seems like a giant wave made of stone that arise itself from the sea. This mountains cannot be crossed, so to reach Cofete you have to arrive in the bottom of the island and to get back towards north through a very dangerous and dirt road.
This is the reason because Cofete is the only place in Fuerteventura completely wild (and for me the most beautiful and impressive).
I heard there's the project to asphalt the road and build hotels and resort...I hope it isn't true!!! The beauty of this place is in its wildness. I'll never forget the sensation to be there, in this desolate beach where the wind continuously blows and you feel so little in front of the Nature.
