Sede de concelho de sete freguesias, Serpa situa-se na margem esquerda do rio Guadiana, numa ondulação de terreno com olivais que vai subindo progressivamente para sul até à Serra de Serpa e para leste até à Serra do Ficalho.
A ocupação humana remonta à pré-história, tendo também subsistido vestígios romanos, visigóticos e árabes. Na sede do concelho o pequeno núcleo muçulmano, ainda hoje fácil de identificar, é um dos principais pontos de interesse. Recebeu foral em 1295.
Actualmente, Serpa, a branca e castiça vila, é centro de uma zona rural que vive da agro-pecuária.
Na Páscoa realiza-se uma grande festa em honra de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, iniciando-se à meia-noite de sábado, com o «rebentar das aleluias» e prolongando-se até terça-feira (o feriado municipal).
