Photographer’s Note
The shorefront at Russell, Bay of Islands. A quick ferry trip across the bay from Paihia, Russell is an attractive little town which upon arrival gives no clues about its turbulent history. The scene of many a skirmish between Maori tribes and early European settlers, the town also attracted the likes of convicts in hiding, prostitutes and drunken sailors. This prompted Charles Darwin to describe Russell as being "full of the refuse of society" in 1835.
