_The MEDIEVAL CASTLE which dominates the city and the valley of Dolo river, is quoted in a charter of 1029.
Its first known Lord is Thibault de Beaumont, founder of Notre-Dame de Bressuire church.
Built on a Gallic oppidum, its visible oldest parts go back to 1066.
Initially a rectangular keep, and a first enclosure at the 11th century were built.
In 1190, 38 turns are divided on an enclosure of 700 m, which surrounded the fortress and its 8 grosses towers. the entries were defended by towers comprising 4 stages of defense.
_The One hundred Year old War started in 1338, and the initial French defeats had as a consequence, the treaty of Brétigny in 1360, which delivered to the English Poitou, Saintonge, the Angoumois, the Limousin, the English Channel, Périgord and Quercy. The castle was delivered to the English garrisons and was released by the Constable of King de France Charles V, Bertrand du Guesclin, in 1371.
_Several family acquired the castle without maintaining it, the last of them made build a NEO-GOTHIC CASTLE in the court of the keep in 1878.

Bressuire is a french commune, located in the department of Deux-Sèvres of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 17799 Bressuirais in 1999, distributed out of 182 km², that is to say 98 hab./km².

_Bressuire is located in the middle of the bocage from Poitou, where hedges and trees are the limits of meadows and fields of forms irregular and variable surfaces, there where the isolated farms or the hamlets are dispersed in the countryside.
The hedges contribute to the storage of water, with the regulation of the local climate, as has the limitation of the populations of devastating insects, by protecting the birds and other wild animals.

_Bressuire bore the name of “Berzoriacum” in 1029, then “Bercorium” in 1095, which would mean “the fortress on the hill”. Bressuire has the ruins of old and wide medieval fortress.
estroyed.

_The Wars of religion of the 16th century, the Wars of the Vendée of the 18th century, the Second world war 1939-1945, damaged successively the city.
