O'Zapft is ! Oktoberfest 2009 Photo

Photographer’s Note

A nearly live image from the Oktoberfest opening in München, which I attended for the first time today. A day full of discovery and beer to me, that I want to dedicate to these courageous ladies bringing beer to the masses, and the word mass has a double meaning here because the glass of beer is called a mass, contains 1 liter of excellent bavarian beer and must weight more than 2 kgs. So considering she carries 8 Masses, it's a weight of about 20 Kgs that she needs to bring throught the packed crowd to the thirsty consumers, a real performance.
To me these ladies are the real stars of the "Wiesn" as Oktoberfest is called in München and deserve a monument in the city center !

A Mass costs € 8.60 this year, this is the price for a liter of beer, about the same as a pint price in Paris so twice as cheap but still expensive by czech standards...

This image is possibly below my usual quality, because it's been taken right into the action and also because after some Masses my photo taking and PP abilities have been significantly alterated ;-)

O'zapf's....und es geht in Bayern los...wobei ich sagen soll, Oktoberfest ist grundsaetzlich eine Attraktive fuer Touristen...die echten Bayern gehen andeswohin Bier trinken....

Bonsoir, JY. Je vois que tu as fait du sport aujourd'hui. Les bières sont bien servies et occupent presque toute la largeur de la photo. La Fraulein a l'air de prendre sa tâche avec tout le sérieux germanique qui s'impose dans de telles circonstances! Ein zwei... g'suffa. A ta santé.

You have found the perfect woman!!!!!! A woman that can carry 8 liters of beer is a bit of perfection.
Your composition is fine with the off center placement of the main subject giving the shot a sense of direction. The closeup sharpness is great allowing us to see the expression on her face.
Oh, how I would love to be in Munich during Oktoberfest!

Fantastic shot!! And glad you enjoyed the day!

This gal does NOT look happy - it's very hard work for them. But I know a few gals who work there every year and say that they can't earn so much money in such a short time (other than... well, you know).

And the mayor of Munich only needed two hits to tap the keg! They say that if he were to need more hits, he won't get re-elected! :-))

Great image and impressive weight lifting by the bar maid. I think you have captured the essence of the Oktoberfest very well here. I'm a bit surprised you took the 5D to such a venue though. Good composition.
The workshop image is interesting too.

What an attractive sight of all this beer. This is really a tempting picture with very good colours all over. It is also a very good portrait of this lady, she doesn´t look real happy, I think her expression shows clearly what she thinks of all these beer drinkers...

Sujet original. Elle a de bons biceps cette serveuse. Il y a une bière qui se renverse et qui coule par terre mais c'est pas grave, il en restera bien assez. J'aime bien voir toute cette mousse. Un petit sourire de la serveuse aurait été plus agréable.

T'as déjà retenu ta table? Tu aurais pu choisir une Fraülein un peu plus accorte mais, vu tout ce qu'elle transporte, on comprend qu'elle ait besoin d'une certaine concentration. Les verres sont pas très nets mais c'est normal vue la consommation sans modération....et le manque de lumière (finalement, à 1200 ISO, la qualité est pas mal quand même...Canon for ever!)

Oktoberfest in Munich, yes, it is impressive when the waitress hold so many enormous glasses of beer. How one can drink so much? Many can :)). The poor woman looks so tired, and no wonder. I was once in munich during the fest and I found it rather awful. But certainly it is not the place for and abstinent.

Je me souviens avoir été impressionnée en voyant un tel spectacle à Munich il y a fort longtemps... pour moi c'est réellement magique!
Tu as bien fait en effet de prendre la photo en arrivant et pas en repartant!
Quand j'étais étudiante et que j'allais en Allemagne, il y avait un super jeu: recouvrir la masse avec un papier, mettre une pièce de monnaie dessus et ensuite à tour de rôle autour de la table, chacun devait faire un trou dans le papier avec sa cigarette. Evidemment celui qui faisait tomber la pièce devait boire la masse cul sec!
Pour ma part, il m'est arrivé de faire tomber la pièce deux fois dans la même soirée... je ne sais plus très bien comment je suis rentrée à l'appartement mais je garde un excellent souvenir de ce jeu!

Hahaha, c est sur qu apres quelques bieres de ce type, ca ne doit pas etre facile de cadrer proprement :-)
L eclairage artificiel laisse une touche de vert peu flateuse pour l ambiance, mais on est vraiment au coeur de l action et c etait bien le but recherché.

je suis allé une fois à l'Oktoberfest et j'avais été frappé par le poids transporté par les serveuses! J'ai fait le calcul avec des choppes que j'ai chez moi l'autre jour à l'occasion d'une discussion entre amis et j'étais arrivé à un total de 18 kg portés à bout de bras!

En général , les bières sont portées un peu plus bas au niveau du ventre pour mettre plus en valeur le haut du corps ... mais l'altération dû à la Paulaner en a décidé autrement..

But really you have still had very well the photo, centred and focusing the attention to the waitress, with his 20 Kgs of tension it raises, makes me nervous alone of looking at the tension in the neck.
