Tulum

Tulum is located on a high cliff with a spectacular view overlooking the beautiful blue-green waters of the Caribbean. It is a Mayan site that was at its height from around AD 1200 until the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors in 1518. The name Tulum means “enclosure” or “walled.” Originally the site was called Zama, or “dawn” reflecting its location on the east coast and the west end alignment of its buildings. Tulum is the only walled Mayan coastal city ever discovered. The site has provided many key pieces of information for archaeologists piecing together ancient Mayan society. Over 60 individual structures stand at Tulum along the paths leading toward the main temple overlooking the sea. A small beautiful beach with powdery white sand lies beneath the cliff below Tulum.
