The lighthouse(headlight) was built, from 1849 on plans(shots) of the architect Léonce Reynaud, to replace the former(ancient) lighthouse(headlight) of 29 metres built in 1682 on the directives of Vauban and who remains even today in the North of the lighthouse(headlight). The starting took place in 1854. The lighthouse(headlight) is 57 metres high and the access to the summit is made by a helical staircase of 257 walking(marches). He(it) is doubled in the wide (northwest) on a rocky bench, the " High Bench of the North ", by a small lighthouse(headlight), a lighthouse(headlight) of Whale calves.
In 2001, the State, after a call for tender, makes him(it) manage by a private company " Heritage(Holdings) Ocean " with for mission of to manage the tourist exploitation(operation), the visits and the shop and to recondition the old tower of whales.
This lighthouse(headlight) is always in service and its fire(light) has a reach(impact) of approximately 50 kilometres. He(it) is visited by 180 000 visitors every year.
A museum dedicated to lighthouses and beacons was created in the former(ancient) school building of the lighthouse keepers in the feet of the old tower.
