Photographer’s Note
.
"Ep Chai" is Khmer term to describe the action of going out to screen the trash cans for recyclable items to trade for meal.
In Cambodia, hundreds of Vietnamese kids don't have the luxury of going to school, due to the poverty of their families, and because they are not recognized by local authorities as human beings. The Vietnamese live out of government care, without any civil document or health care. As a result, they are the lowest class in the society. They exist in the gap between Vietnamese embassy and the Kingdom of Cambodia.
This picture is one of the shots I made during a recent assigment for the Vietnamese TIME newspaper that I had the chance to return to the country to cover the kids who survive by scavengering the trash containers in Siem Reap City.
