Photographer’s Note

Piazza Anfiteatro is a large oval of buildings built over the foundations of an original Roman amphitheatre, in the delightful walled town of Lucca. Founded by the Etruscans, Lucca became a Roman colony in 180BC and a self-governing city in the 12th century. It remained independent until Napoleon came along in 1805 and turned it into a principality under the control of his sister Elisa. It was later incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy.

The metallic dome-shaped object in the middle is a (temporary, I think?) piece of modern art made of lots of small metal plates fastened together.

I took this shot from underneath the archway of one of the entrances to the Piazza. PP-wise I have cropped, corrected a bit of tilt and boosted the contrast slightly.
